Eleanor Roosevelt Legacy Committee

The Eleanor Roosevelt Legacy Committee (Eleanor's Legacy) inspires and supports pro-choice Democratic women to run for local and state offices in New York. The Legacy sponsors campaign training schools, links candidates with volunteers and experts, collaborates with like-minded organizations and provides campaign grants to endorsed candidates.[1]

History

Judith Hollensworth Hope founded Eleanor's Legacy in 2001 and was president until April 2008. The mission of Eleanor's Legacy was inspired by Eleanor Roosevelt, one of the most influential Americans of the 20th century. On a state, national and international level, Roosevelt helped create new roles for women in public life.

Eleanor's Legacy has elected more than 285 women to state and local office and equipped over 900 women with the skills necessary to run for office and manage campaigns. In 2007, the Legacy Committee Awarded approximately $110,000 in campaign grants to 174 pro-choice women candidates, which resulted in 86 women getting elected to office.[2] Also in 2007, in her 2008 campaign for president, Hillary Clinton gave a speech to the organization in an effort to garner support for the female vote.[3] Cathy Lasry served as Eleanor's Legacy second president, from April 2008 until March 2010. Nora Bredes, of Rochester, New York, was elected president April 8, 2010. Following the death of Nora Bredes in 2011, Judith Hope was again elected president of the organization.[4]
