En Kanavan En Thozhan (English: My husband is my friend) is a Tamil television soap opera on the Star Vijay channel. This show is the dubbed version of Hindi serial Diya Aur Baati Hum on Star Plus. It started airing on 29 August 2011 and airs Monday through Friday at 2 pm IST. It stars Anas Rashid and Deepika Singh in lead roles.

Plot summary

En Kanavan En Thozhan is the story of a woman named Sandhya who dreams to become an IPS officer from her childhood days by the inspiration of her father. Surya is a self-made man who is a famous sweet-shop owner. He engaged to marry a girl named Kavitha. One day, Sandhya's parents were died in a bomb blast. Sandhya gets sad. Kavitha runs out on the day of marriage. The people insults Surya. Saroja gets angry and challenges that she will get a good daughter-in-law within 15 days. Then Sandhya's brother Aakash thinks about the marriage of Sandhya. A matchmaker named Krishna tries to fix Surya and Sandhya's marriage. At first, Aakash denies Surya as he is uneducated. But later Aakash has no choice. He also seen Surya's good character. Saroja also accepts Sandhya. After Sandhya unwillingly marries Surya for her brother. Sandhya thinks her dream was broken as she is married to a traditional family.

Meenakshi steals jewels from a shop. An unknown person complaints against Saroja for it. That person is actually Meena. Saroja gets arrested and then released by bail. Later Meena confess the truth. Surya is shocked and surprised to see Sandhya's photo in newspaper. She gets 3rd rank in BA in whole Rajasthan. Saroja blames Sandhya for it and asks to leave Rathi house. Sandhya begs forgiveness to Saroja. Saroja told that Sandhya have to win in 15 days test. Surya helps Sandhya in cooking. Then Sandhya won in 15 days challenge.

Later Surya and Sandhya met some misunderstandings in their life. This lead to their divorce. But Sandhya did not sign in that papers as she loves Surya and Rathi family. Sandhya told Dilip's mother to postpone Savitha'-Dilip's marriage for one year for Savitha's education. Dilip's mother accepts it. Surya blames Sandhya for spoil his sister's life. He asks Sandhya to leave out of Rathi house as she would not match to Rathi family. Sandhya went out of Rathi house. Even Saroja did not want Sandhya to leave the house. But Surya is adamant. Sandhya went in bus which later met an accident. Surya searches Sandhya. He finds Sandhya and hugs her. He asks forgiveness to Sandhya for his rude behavior and took her back to Rathi house again.

A man named Rajkumar comes to Surya's sweet shop as a servant. For participating in World Cook competition, Surya went to Singapore with his parents and Sandhya. With the help of Sandhya, Surya won the World's Best Cook trophy. Surya and Sandhya realise their love in Singapore.

Then the truth is revealed that Rajkumar is a terrorist. He set a bomb on Chotu's kurta. After knowing it, Sandhya throws the kurta away. DSP congratulates Sandhya for her courage. Sandhya hide her IPS dream from Surya. She wrote her dream in a letter to Surya. Then Surya reads that letter. He tells Sandhya to share her dream directly with him. Sandhya tells that she wants to become an IPS officer. Surya promises Sandhya that he will help her to achieve her dream. Surya tells about Sandhya's dream to Saroja. But Saroja did not accept it. So Surya registered Sandhya in a night college in Ajmer. Every night Sandhya secretly went to night college and continued her studies. The family members did not know about it.

Later Surya confess the truth to Saroja about night college. Saroja gets angry and blames Sandhya. Surya begs forgiveness to Saroja. She tells Surya became a slave to his wife. Arun argues with Saroja and tells about the good deeds of Sandhya in past. Then Saroja grants permission to Sandhya to pursue her dream. Later Sandhya reveals the true identity of a priest in front of everyone. In spite of her permission, Saroja did not want Sandhya to become an IPS officer.

Preethi revealed that she is pregnant with Mohan's child. But Saroja did not accept Preethi as she is a Christian. Then Sandhya asks Saroja to accept Preethi. Then Saroja told that she went to a village for her mother-in-law's 60th year wedding anniversary. Preethi have to won Saroja's mother-in-law's mind. She also come with them. That village people did not accept low cast people. One day a bunglaow catches fire in which several children played. A low cast woman walking on a rope and saved children from fire. After that incident villagers changes their mind on low cast people. Mohan-Preethi gets married. Preethi changes her as a daughter-in-law of Rathi house.

Sandhya participate in a quiz competition led by Shah Rukh Khan. Saroja tells Sandhya to lose in the competition. In spite of knowing right answers, Sandhya tells wrong answers. In the interval time, Arun and Surya encourages her. Then Sandhya won the trophy. Surya gets sad on Saroja and went out of house with Sandhya. He had hope in his mother who accepts him in 15 days. After some days, Saroja changes her mind. She accepts Sandhya's dream with a promise from Sandhya that she must manage the two positions- an IPS officer and a daughter-in-law.

Preethi want to open a parlour shop. Saroja accepts it. Meenakshi gets jealous on Preethi as her parlour is going well.

Sandhya gets passed in IPS exam. Then she also passed in interview. Sandhya went to Hyderabad for 11 months IPS training . Saroja also gave permission to her. Saroja tells Sandhya that she must win the best cadet trophy for getting duty at her own residence. At first, Sandhya met several loses. Sandhya had several body aches. Sandhya tests by pregnancy kit. The result is positive. Hearing the news, Saroja gets more happy. But the doctor later reveals that Sandhya is not pregnant. Surya encourages Sandhya. Saroja is afraid if Sandhya will not get the trophy. She decided to ask help to Kavitha. For that help, Saroja tells to people that Kavitha is a good woman.

Meenakshi plans to shut Preethi's parlour. Meenakshi calls consumer care department and tells Preethi's parlour have expired things. Then officers ride on Preethi's parlour and find expired things. So they sealed Preethi's parlour shop.

Surya encourages Sandhya. After Sandhya won in several hard tasks. But Sandhya had a weakness in her eyesight due to an incident happened in Diwali. So Sandhya was not able to shot the target in a task. Later Sandhya and others went to a jungle for the last task. Some terrorists kidnapped Agrima Singh. Sandhya knows it and saves Agrima from terrorists. She shot the terrorist in the forehead as a target. After Agrima announces the best cadet trophy to Sandhya. Sandhya tells about her family and her husband Surya's help to achieve her dream. Sandhya gets ASP post in her residence.

At first, Sandhya arrests a man named Someshwar. Mohan tells Chavi is the reason to shut Preethi's shop. Their relationship goes bitter. Then Kavitha did evil plans for winning in election. But Sandhya stopped those plans. Someshwar also join hands with Kavitha. Then Someshwar became changed into good. He tells Sandhya about the true identity of Kavitha. But Sandhya's family members believe Kavitha is a good woman. Because of an IPS officer, Sandhya hides the truth of Kavitha from her family members.

Savitha broke the truth to family about Mohan who is jobless since months. He left that job as Preethi's parlour running well. Saroja slaps Mohan and asks him to leave the house. Preethi also wishes to go with Mohan. But Mohan asks her to stay back with family. Saroja calms Preethi and tells that she did it for Mohan to realise his fault and find a job for himself.

Surya learns driving to gave surprise to Sandhya. He also get license. One day he drive police jeep and hit the police jeep infront of police station. Media raises many questions on Sandhya. They told that Sandhya uses her ASP post for her own benefits. DSP gets angry on Sandhya. The higher officers transfers her to traffic police department. Surya and other people wants Sandhya as ASP. They gave letters to DSP by Zakir. After reading letters, DSP and other high officers decided that Sandhya have to complete 3 tasks to reget her ASP post. The first task is to reduce traffic crimes. Sandhya and other family members take a trafic awareness film. At first many people dislikes that film. But Saroja told Sandhya not to lost hope. Then Zakir told Sandhya that traffic crimes were reduced to zero. Rathi family gets happy. Sandhya succeeded in her first task and get positive memo from DSP.

Mohan gets arrested for stealing bike of Vikram's friend. Later it is revealed that Vinith is real culprit. Vinith gets arrested and Mohan gets released from jail. Saroja arranges pooja for celebrating that happy. Kavitha come to Rathi house for that pooja. Agrima also visits Sandhya as a surprise. There she saw Kavitha and remembers her. In past, Kavitha calls Agrima and told her Sandhya would not won the Best Cadet Trophy. By learning this, Saroja and other family members get shocked. They blames Kavitha. Kavitha get lost in election. Getting insult, she left from Rathi house. Kavitha plans to take revenge from Rathi family. She uses Balakrishnan whose father sell sweet shop to Surya. He asks to return his father's sweet shop. Surya did not have legal papers for that shop. Finally Kavitha's plan get failed by Sandhya. SHe gets arrested by Zakir.

Surya had invited for a food festival in Dubai. A woman named Disha come as Surya's helper. Agrima gave duty to Sandhya and Zakir to protect a terrorist who will hang up after 7 days. That terrorist is none but Rajkumar. Vikram saw a woman named Prema who is pregnant. Her husband tries to kill her as she bore a female child. Vikram takes Prema to his textile shop as a servant. Meena gets jealous on Prema. She tried many plans to run Prema. But all of them gets failed. Vikram gets angry on Meena and tells he is going to marry Prema. Meena gets shocked. Arun and Saroja also accept prema. Surya gets sad on Saroja's doings. Then Arun and Saroja told Surya about their plan to unite Vikram and Meena.

Rajkumar tries to escape from jail. Sandhya and Zakir jailed Rajkumar in a home with protection of trained officers. Later it is revealed that Disha is in Rajkumar's side. But Sandhya did not known about it. Rajkumar send Disha a doll which have time bomb. Disha places that doll in a chair. But Surya saw that doll and doubts on it. He informs to police. The people were saved from bomb blast. Then it is revealed that Prema is also on Rajkumar's side. Rajkumar's sister Maya tries to release Rajkumar by doing Operation Grahanam. The operation is to hijack a plane and demands for Rajkumar's release to police. They try to do weapons dealing secretly, but Sandhya and Zakir learned it and chases Maya. But Maya escapes from them. Their weapon dealing plan gets failed. Maya told Prema and Disha to separate Zakir and Sandhya's friendship.

A constable gets murdered. His memo turns evidence against Zakir. People blames on Zakir. He gets worried. Sandhya finds a code 2310. Disha tells Rathi family that Surya gets ticket for going to Dubai. That ticket contains 2310 code. Before Sandhya seeing that ticket, Prema burns that ticket wisely. Prema scolds Disha and tells Sandhya find the code 2310. Maya plans to use Zakir to fool Sandhya. She tells that she help Zakir to reget his police duty if he join hands with their team. Zakir accept it. It is really Sandhya and Zakir's plan to find about Operation Grahanam. Maya asks Zakir's help to return their weapons. Zakir accept it. Sandhya lays a track for Maya. But Maya wisely escapes from it. Zakir overhears Prema said about Operation Grahanam. He tries to arrest Prema and Disha. But Maya came there and hits Zakir on his neck. Sandhya gets shocked to see Zakir. The doctor tells Zakir gets paralysed and his condition is critical.

Rathi family plans to reunite Vikram-Meenakshi. They try to do Meenakshi's remarriage with a man. Vikram gets jealous on that man. Later he confess his love for Meenakshi.

Sandhya lays a track for Maya. She passes a rumour that Rajkumar's sentence is fasted. Maya, Prema and Disha plans to make Rajkumar illness. Maya changes as a nurse. Disha tries a plan but gets failed. Maya also failed on her plan. Suddenly Rajkumar become unconscious.

This show is dubbed in Telugu as Ee Tharam Illalu on Maa TV and remaked in Malayalam as Parasparam on Asianet TV. It also remaked in Kannada, Marathi and Bengali languages but stopped after several episodes.

This show is dubbed in Sri Lanka as “Swapna” on Sirasa TV, Afghanistan as “Da Meeni Deeva”, Vietnam as Vợ tôi là cảnh sát on VTVCab 5 Echannel. It also telecast in Pakistan on Urdu 1 without dubbing due to Hindi-Urdu similarity in speech. It also telecast in Thailand, Russia, Romania and Bulgaria with subtitles.
