Fordingbridge Hospital is a small community hospital in Fordingbridge, Hampshire, England. The hospital is on the same site as the previous Fordingbridge Infirmary and prior to that the Fordingbridge Workhouse. The buildings are largely original Victorian with a modern ward for inpatients. It is managed by Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust based in Calmore, Southampton.[1]

History

In 1885 a Union Workhouse was built on the site in Bartons Road to replace the one in Shaftesbury Road that had been destroyed by fire. The site and buildings cost a little over £9,000 and were built in a simple Queen Anne style which is largely still intact.[2]

In the 1930s the workhouse became a Public Assistance Institution and in 1948 it was incorporated into the newly formed National Health Service, and was then known as Fordingbridge Infirmary.[2]

In the mid 1980s the former Fordingbridge Cottage Hospital, in Highfield House on the Alderholt Road was transferred into a newly built ward on the Fordingbridge Infirmary site. The hospital was then called Fordingbridge Hospital.

The local general practitioners’ medical centre is on the same site.[3]

Services

The hospital today provides 20 beds for older people and has physiotherapy and occupational therapy support. A small outpatient department in the older building accommodates a moderate range of specialities including:

  • Podiatry
  • Ear, nose and throat
  • Audiology
  • Speech and Language Therapy
  • Continence Service
  • Dermatology
  • Stroke Clinic
  • Action on Hearing
  • Dietician[1]
