Geoffrey S. Berman is an American lawyer currently serving as the Acting United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York.[1] While Berman currently serves as U.S. attorney on an interim basis, he is President Donald Trump's nominee to permanently serve in the position.[2]
Career
Berman began his career as a law clerk for Judge Leonard I. Garth in the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit.[3] He served for three years as an associate to independent counsel Lawrence Walsh during investigation into the Iran–Contra affair. There, he was part of a team that was able to prosecute former CIA employee, Thomas Cliness on tax fraud charges. Berman later served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney for New York's southern district from 1990-1994.[4]
In 2006, Berman joined the law firm Greenberg Traurig, and is now a managing shareholder in the firm's New Jersey and New York offices.[5] The law firm is connected to former New York City Mayor Rudy Guiliani, who is the law firm's chairman of Cybersecurity, Privacy and Crisis Management Practice.[6]

Upon President Donald Trump firing Preet Bharara as U.S. Attorney, Trump reportedly interviewed Berman among other candidates for the position.[7] On January 3, 2018, Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced that he would appoint Berman, along with 16 other former prosecutors, to serve in various U.S. attorney's offices around the country in an interim basis until the Senate can permanently confirm them.[8][9]
