George Lewis was an American politician, who served as the ninth, and final, Mayor[2] of Roxbury, Massachusetts from 1863-1867. Lewis was born in Roxbury to Eliajh Lewis[3] and Elizabeth Sumner (Doggetrt) Lewis.[4] Lewis was first elected mayor in the election of December 8, 1862. Lewis defeated his opponent S. U. Williams by about 300 votes.[5] Pursuant to Roxbury city charter,[6] Lewis was sworn into office on the first Monday of the new year, January 5, 1863. Lewis' was mayor until the City of Roxbury was formerly annexed by the City of Boston on January 5, 1867.[7][not in citation given]
