Biography

Early Years

Pellegrini was born in Sparkill, New York to photographer Roger Pellegrini of Italian origin, and actress Maureen Mooney. She received a B.A. from Wellesley College, then attended the French Culinary Institute in New York City. She went on to cook in restaurants in New York and France, including Blue Hill at Stone Barns, Gramercy Tavern, and Michelin starred restaurant in Provence, La Chassagnette.[1]

Books

In her latest book, Modern Pioneering, Pellegrini teaches modern day pioneer skills and "manual literacy". It is a cookbook and backyard gardening and homesteading guide for people who want to grow food efficiently, cook seasonal recipes, or even try foraging, camping, and living off the land. In addition it teaches DIY projects and "superwoman skills". The tagline for the book is "self-sufficiency is the ultimate girl power".

In Girl Hunter, Pellegrini writes about the experience of traveling around the U.S. and abroad to hunt her own meat, in order to step outside the industrial food system. She writes from the perspective of a classically trained chef, who didn't grow up hunting, and includes close to 100 recipes and vivid detail on the characters she meets along the way. Girl Hunter was named one of the Top 10 Sports Books of 2012 by Booklist, a Best Book of the Month by Amazon, lauded a review by Publishers Weekly and lauded in a review by the Wall Street Journal.[2][3][4][5]

In her first book Food Heroes, Pellegrini tells the story of 16 food artisans around the world who are fighting to preserve their traditions. This book is an extension of Pellegrini’s "retro-locavore" food philosophy that harkens back to "Grandma's kitchen". She believes that true culinary satisfaction comes when there is a sense of place behind a meal. Food Heroes was nominated for an IACP award for best culinary writing with recipes.[6][7]

Adventure Getaways

Pellegrini is the creator of Adventure Getaways across the country, where she leads women on trips that include a combination of outdoor activities; horseback riding, clay shooting, fly fishing, hunting, ATV riding, falconry.[8]

Other Work

Pellegrini has a popular website in which she chronicles her adventures hunting and cooking her ingredients, as well as tutorials on what she calls "pioneer skills". She also profiles the artisans she meets in her travels and offers recipes with step-by-step photographs. Her site was nominated for a 2010 Bloggie Award.[9]

In 2005, as Director of Counter-terrorism Research at the Manhattan Institute, Pellegrini edited a vital anti-terrorism report called: "Hard Won Lessons: Policing Terrorism in the United States".[10]

In September 2011, Pellegrini was the second woman ever to appear on the cover of Shooting Sportsman Magazine.[11]

In December 2011, a Girl Hunter trailer was released in which Pellegrini talks about her food philosophy as a chef and hunter.[12]

In January 2012, Pellegrini was seen cooking and being interviewed on the Today Show with Matt Lauer.[13]

In March 2012, Pellegrini landed on a Forbes list of top female entrepreneurs.[14]

In April 2012, Pellegrini was seen cooking and being interviewed on Jimmy Kimmel Live![15][16]

In November 2013, the New York Times "T" Magazine wrote about Pellegrini’s women's "Adventure Getaways".[17]
