Graphic Era University, formerly Graphic Era Institute of Technology, is a deemed university located in Clement Town, Dehradun, Uttarakhand, India. The university was founded as 'Graphic Era Institute of Technology' in 1993 and in 2008 it has accorded with the status of Deemed University.

History

Graphic Era Institute of Technology was founded in 1993 and started with undergraduate programs in core engineering and allied sciences. Soon after the establishment. On August 14, 2008 Graphic Era Institute of Technology was awarded with Deemed University title under section 3 of UGC act and Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India.

Graphic Era University was established by Prof. Kamal Ghanshala, an academician and computer engineer, in 1993. He is a past recipient of the Uttarakhand Ratan Award, the International Millennium Goldstar award and the lifetime achievement award from Indian Economic Development and Research Association, New Delhi.

The university now offers 40 undergraduate and postgraduate courses across disciplines like engineering and technology, management, allied sciences, humanities and social sciences, and hospitality.

Campus

The university campus has been designed along a seasonal stream. The teaching departments are located on the main campus. The B.Tech block also houses an amphitheater. There are four boys hostel namely Sai, Satya, APJ Abdul Kalam and Subhash Chandra Bose on the peripheral of campus and a senior boys hostel along with a separate building for staff accommodation and three girls hostel, is situated within the campus. There are over 1000 rooms available for student accommodation.

There is a central library, adjoining two blocks dedicated to computer labs. Further up the stream is the engineering block, that houses the high roof manufacturing workshop, the Robotics laboratory and Computer Aided Design lab. A separate management block caters to the lecture halls and facilities for Management studies. The hotel management block and new hospitality block has university restaurant, seminar hall, conference halls and dedicated libraries.

Cafeterias and canteens are spread all over the campus. There is in-house book store and a national bank. There is an international class guest house near main entrance. A sport complex and grounds for different games, basketball, tennis, cricket and football are well equipped. Many flowering gardens have been established along the stream.

Academics

School of Engineering and Technology

The School of Engineering and Technology started functioning in the 1996-1997 academic year by initiating programs across various disciplines of engineering. The school expanded to offer multidisciplinary programs in other frontier areas spanning varied engineering disciplines. The school offers courses and research projects in collaboration with the Centre for excellence in plant tissues, Advance Centre for Research on jet propulsion, Centre for Modeling and Simulation(CMS) and Central Instrumentation Laboratory (CIL) on campus.

The School of Engineering and Technology is collaborating closely with other research institutions, such as the California State University, University of Worcester-UK, Sheffield Hallam University, Polytech Nantes and Ufa State Petroleum Technological University Bashkortostan, Russia. The school is forging links with diverse Indian industries in an effort to build a program spanning high-quality scientific and applied research.

The Department of Civil Engineering was established in the year 2007. The department has its own building of 29000 square feet. The department runs undergraduate courses, postgraduate program and research activities. The department offers a four-year undergraduate program in specialized fields.

Department of Biotechnology at Graphic Era University came into existence in the year 2008. The Department is currently running B. Tech (Biotechnology). Apart from this, M.Tech (Biotechnology) was also introduced from the session 2012–2013. Department has total 15 faculty members, 8 non-teaching staff and 30 research scholars. The department has laboratories for plant tissue culture, animal cell culture, recombinant DNA technology and microbiology. Several projects funded by Uttarakhand State Biotechnology Department (USBD) and Uttarakhand state council for science and technology (UCOST) are ongoing.

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering and the Department of Information Technology was established in 2002, by the approval of All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE), to meet the growing requirement of engineers in Computer Science and Information Technology discipline. The Department of Computer Science and Engineering and the Department of Information Technology has several faculty members with doctoral degrees. Faculty members are also involved in researches in areas like high performance computing, network security and forensics, and bioinformatics.

The Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering came into existence in 2002, to meet the growing requirement of practical design engineers in the country and abroad. The department has various labs, such as an Advanced DSP Lab, Devices and Circuits Lab, VLSI HDL Lab, Electronic Circuits Lab and Digital Electronics Lab. Along with the B.Tech in Electronics and Communication Engineering the Department started M.Tech and Ph.D. courses in the year 2009. Two French students from University of Nantes have successfully completed their internship program under the guidance of faculty from the department.

The Department of Electrical & Electronics was established in 2004. Electrical & Electronics Department has the unique advantage of being the combination of both Electrical Engineering and Electronics Engineering and thus providing the students benefit to study broader subjects which provide them double advantage for placements in companies of repute related to both the fields.

The Department of Instrumentation and Control Engineering offers B.Tech., M.Tech((Instrumentation & Control Engineering) (two years)) and doctoral courses (Ph. D. in Instrumentation & Control Engineering). It also facilitates a practical environment for students to study the core subjects such as transducers, microcontrollers, embedded systems, industrial automation, biomedical signal processing and soft computing techniques. The department also promotes the research and development activities in the above fields and many more.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering offers a diverse range of meticulous academic programs designed to prepare undergraduate and postgraduate students for the challenges and opportunities that abound in modern technology and society.

The Department offers B. Tech in Mechanical Engineering and Automobile Engineering which combines a broad-based education in the engineering sciences with project-based laboratory and design subjects to give graduates a strong grounding in quantitative, problem-solving, design, and communications skills. The department is active in various thrust areas of research. Some of them are finite element analysis, mechanical vibration, soft computing & response surface modelling, vibration and acoustics.

Realizing the cardinal needs of well trained human resource for this industry, Graphic Era University took a new initiative to start a four-year multidisciplinary, industry-oriented B. Tech program in petroleum engineering with effect from the academic year 2012–13.

School of Computer Applications

MCA (Master of Computer Application) is a three-year master's degree Program started from academic year 2000. It has produced eleven batches of postgraduate professionals. The syllabus of MCA includes the core papers of computer science, mathematical science and few paper of management.

School of Management Studies

The School of Management Studies offers Bachelor of Business Administration (B.B.A), which is a three-year course. Many postgraduate programs are also offered, such as Master of Business Administration with specialization in Agri-Business, Business Analytics and Intelligence, Corporate Management, Retail Management, Finance, Human Resource, Marketing, International Business and Information Technology. School of Management Studies also offers a doctoral program.

School of Allied Science

Allied science has a flexible plan of study designed to meet a wide range of academic interest and career goals. Various departments under this arena work with an objective to prepare the scholars for the corporate world. The departments that work under this wing are of Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Professional Communication, Environmental science and Hotel Management. The School of Allied Science offers a Bachelor of Hotel Management (B.H.M) course along with multiple postgraduate programs, such as M.Sc. in Information Technology, Biotechnology and Microbiology and Doctoral programs such as Ph.D. in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Environmental Science.

Research and achievements

Graphic Era University has a training and placement department, the Corporate Resource Cell, which works towards the fulfillment of the students' aspirations of attaining the best professional career. Campus placement drives at Graphic Era University attract multinational organizations like WIPRO, Cognizant, Tata Consultancy Services, Contus, Appstudioz, Aon Hewitt and HCL Technologies. More than 2000 placements were recorded in academic session 2012–2013. Recently Arvind Mishra, a faculty of this institution claimed the longest marathon lecture[1] award hosted by Guinness world records.Graphic Era University has been awarded "A" grade with grade points of {3.23/4.00} from National Assessment and Accreditation Council {NAAC}.

Graphic Era University has facilities to conduct multiple intra-university tournaments for sports like table-tennis, badminton, cricket, basketball and football. The university regularly gets involved in activities such as UTU Dehradun Inter College Cricket Tournament, Khel Mahotsav Mahasangram, interuniversity games being hosted by the Association of Indian Universities, Intercollege Volleyball Tournament, District Cricket league, 20 Inter-District Basket Ball League and Inter-State Athletics Meet.

The university regularly holds sports tournaments such as the President Cup and Interdepartmental Cup.

Graphic Era University regularly conducts several social activities and has multiple social clubs. The Mountaineering and Trekking Club conducts trekking expeditions to places like Valley of Flowers, Pindari Glaciers and other Challenging Rock Climbing events. The Wildlife Club visits places such as wildlife centuries, zoos and research stations, surveying fish population using electro fishing methods, tracking animals using radio telemetry. The Web designing club conducts several activities to augment and applaud the best of the talents. The Graphic Era University Film Society enjoys modern and classic movies and documentaries.

Graphic Era University also has an Automobile Club, Software Club, Speaker's Club, Eco Club, Dance Club, Photography Club and Quiz Club. Graphic Era University also has an active NCC wing as well as an NSS wing which indulges in various cultural, intellectual, environmental, social and national events and activities. To achieve this Graphic Era University includes a Corporate Social Responsibility(CSR) division which conducts a range of activities from blood donation camps to awareness campaigns.
