Habib University is an independent liberal arts university located in Karachi, Pakistan.[3][4]

Sponsored and named after the House of Habib, the university was established as a non-profit in 2014. It is a multi-disciplinary varsity offering undergraduate degree's in science, engineering, arts, humanities and social sciences. It has a strong liberal arts focus and requires all students all its students to take a set of liberal arts courses consisting of sociology, history, philosophy and anthropology.[5][6]

The university has strong affiliations with Pitzer College, University of Michigan,[7] Carnegie Mellon University, LUMS[8] and Texas A&M University.[9][10] It has a student to teacher ratio of 12:1,[11] it's six acre campus is located in Gulistan-e-Jauhar and has 1,000 full time students.[12] It's academic staff is led by Dr. Asif Farrukhi and Dr. Shoaib Zaidi. The university is regarded as a progressive education institute.[13]

History

In 2010, the House of Habib formed the Habib University Foundation (a not-for-profit organization).The Habib University project was launched with a grant of US$40 million. Construction on the campus in Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Karachi began in 2012, after the charter for establishment of HU was passed by Sindh Assembly in June of that year.[14][15] The Habib University (HU) city campus covers an area of 6.8 Acres (295,800 sq ft.).[16][17]

The university has a joint venture contract with Texas A&M University at Qatar and is collaborating with Carnegie Mellon University, USA for reciprocal sharing of institutional experience and has signed a partnership agreement for the association.[18]

Habib University's first class of undergraduate students began in August 2014.

Academics

Through its two schools, the university offers four undergraduate degrees, each with several options.

School of Arts Humanities and Social Sciences

[19] The school has three affiliate Centers, the Arzu Center for Regional Languages and Humanities;[20] The Yohsin Center for Social Development;[21] and the Center for Media and Design.

Bsc (Honours) Social Development and Policy

The SDP program offers concentrations in the following areas:

  • Poverty and Inequality
  • Governance and Human Rights
  • Urban and Community Studies
  • Culture and Expression
  • Ethics and Social Justice

BA (Honours) Communication Studies and Design

The program offers three streams:

  • Communication Studies
  • Communication Design
  • Moving-Image Media Production

School of Science and Engineering

BS Computer Science

It offers four program thrusts: Security, Big Data, Cloud Computing, Computer Graphics and Visualization.

BS Electrical Engineering

Admissions and financial aid

Admissions

Admission considerations include grades, test scores, an interview, co-curricular activities, achievements and a personal statement. A call for admissions is announced in October of the year prior to students enrolling for undergraduate degree programs. Round 1 of admissions closes in February and students are awarded their decision in March. Round 2 of admissions, which limits financial aid, closes in June and classes start in August.

Habib University students hail from secondary school examination backgrounds including the Cambridge International Examinations Board (GCE A level), the Aga Khan University Examination Board, Boards of Intermediate Education Pakistan, International Baccalaureate among others.

Financial aid

Habib University keeps its financial aid and scholarships application separate from its admissions application. For the academic year 2014–2015:

  • 92% of students got financial assistance,
  • A total of PKR 72 million were spent on scholarships and financial aid,
  • PKR 39 million was given in scholarships,
  • PKR 25 million were offered through highly subsidized student loans,
  • PKR 8 million were given as grants.

Faculty

Habib University's two schools are led by Dr. Asif Farrukhi, Interim Dean, School of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences;[22] and Dr. Shoaib Zaidi, Dean, School of Science and Engineering respectively. Dr. Noman Naqvi served as the first dean of School of Arts Humanities and Social Sciences.[23] Its Office of Research and Continuing Education is led by Dr. Charles Timothy Spracklen.[24] The University's faculty members include notable academics and area experts including Dr. Basit Memon, Dr. Waqar Saleem, Dr. Muhammad Shumail, Dr. Shahid Shaikh, Dr. Anzar Khaliq, Dr. Jibran Rashid, Jamil Dehlvi, Dr. Nosheen Ali[25] among others.

Notable guest scholars and lecturers

Some personalities that have spoken in Pakistan through the university include Vali Nasr, Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak,[26] Thomas Blom Hansen,[27][28] Zehra Nigah, Intizar Hussain, Imdad Hussaini, Nadeem F. Paracha,[29] and Sean Pue [30] among others.
