Handan Biroğlu (born March 1, 1981) is a Turkish Paralympian female archer competing in the women's compound bow event.

Early life

Handan Biroğlu was born in Erzincan, Turkey on March 1, 1981.[1] She resides in Ankara.[2]

In 2001, she was paralyzed due to a spinal cord injury resulting from a traffic accident involving the bus in which she was travelling and she now requires the use of a wheelchair.[3]

During her pregnancy, physicians advised her to abort due to her paraplegia and to her fetus' brain defect. However, she decided to give birth risking her own life.[4] Two years after the accident, she became the mother of a daughter.[3][5] Six years after her daughter's birth, she and her husband separated. Biroğlu raised her daughter Nurdan alone living at her father's home.[4]

She says "Her daughter helped to her rehabilitation", and adds that "I chose archery to be a powerful role model for my daughter."[3][5]

Sporting career

In the last months of 2013, Biroğlu began to perform archery in the compound bow event by training under the instruction of coach Macide Erdener at the archery field in Lozan Park of Çankaya, Ankara.[2][3][5] Sshe competed for the archery-specialized sports club Ankara Okçuluk İhtisas SK,[6][7] before she transferred to Ankara Bozoklar SK.[8] She has been coached by Okyay Tunç Küçükkayalar since 2014.[2]

The right-handed sportswoman shoots 69 cm (27 in)-long arrows, and has a draw weight of 26 kg (57 lb).[2] In 2015, Biroğlu was named Disabled Sportsperson of the Year in Turkey.[4]

Already in March 2014, Biroğlu qualified to join the tranining cmap of Turkey national team after ranking fourth at the Turkish Indoor Archery Para Championships.[6]

She debuted internationally in 2014 competing at the 2014 European Para Archery Championships held in Nottwil, Switzerland.[2] She placed eighth in the Compound Bow Open Women event, and won the bronze medal in the Compound Women Open Team event with her teammates Burcu Dağ and Gülbin Su after defeating Italy in the finals.[1][9] At the 2015 World Archery Para Championships held in Donaueschingen, Germany, Biroğlu placed fifth in the Compound Women Open event after defeating Ireland's Kerrie-Louise Leonard, and secured so a spot for the 2016 Rio Paralympics.[10] She took the silver medal in the Compound Women Open event at the 2016 European Para Archery Championships in Saint-Jean-de-Monts, France after beaten by the Russian Tatiana Andrievskaia in the final.[2][8][11]

Biroğlu became the runner-up at the 2016 Turkish Archery Para Championships held in Kemer, Antalya.[12]
