Rani performing in 2021

Hania Rani (born Hanna Raniszewska; 1990, Gdańsk) is a Polish pianist, composer and singer. She studied music at the Music School Feliks Nowowiejski in Gdańsk and the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music.[1][2][3]

Biography

Trained as a classical pianist, Rani began incorporating jazz into her work during music school.[4] In 2015, she collaborated with Dobrawa Czocher on the album Biala Flaga, featuring their arrangements of music from fellow Polish Grzegorz Ciechowski. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Rani started experimenting with improvisation and composing.[5] She is now recognized as a developing and pioneering artist within the post-classical (also known as neo-classical) music genre.[6]

In 2022 Rani was invited to Paris to perform recorded live shows for ARTE and Cercle.[7][8]

Critical reception

Rani has attracted attention for blurring traditional distinctions between jazz, classical, and house music and being a masterful performer and composer.[9]

"Hania Rani links two, three songs and plays for 15 minutes in one go. At the end of such a run nobody dares to applaud until they are 100% sure that this is really the end. No one wants to kill the sublimity of the moment, and uncover himself as hopelessly ignorant, by clapping when clapping is not yet due. We all know that if someone speaks softly, people listen better. With Hania Rani and her music it is the same." [10]
