"Hurricane" is a song by American rapper Kanye West and Canadian singer the Weeknd from West's tenth studio album Donda (2021) and features vocals from American rapper Lil Baby.[3] The song was sent to American rhythmic contemporary radio stations on September 14, 2021 as the album's lead single.[4] It was originally slated for inclusion on West's ninth studio album Yandhi, which was eventually reworked heavily and renamed to Jesus Is King. The song achieved chart success in multiple countries, reaching the top ten in Australia, Canada, Ireland, Norway, the United Kingdom and the United States.

Background and recording

"Hurricane" was originated from the sessions for West's scrapped 2018 album Yandhi. Two teaser videos posted to West's Instagram and Twitter in September 2018 previewed a version of the song which features West singing the chorus.[5] Several versions of the full song leaked in 2019, containing verses from Ant Clemons, Big Sean, Sean Leon, Ty Dolla $ign, Young Thug, and 6ix9ine.[6][7][8][9]

On July 18, 2020, West announced in a Twitter post that he would release a new album titled Donda on July 24, 2020, teasing a track list that included "Hurricane".[10] On July 21, 2020, West tweeted that "Lil Baby my favorite rapper but won't do a song wit me". Lil Baby was subsequently flown out to Cody, Wyoming the same week to record for Donda.[11][12] During that session, Lil Baby recorded his verse for "Hurricane" with KayCyy recording a bridge for the track.[13]

The reworked song was first previewed officially on July 22, 2021, during a listening party at Mercedes Benz Stadium.[14] The version played at the listening party featured a hook that was "heavily autotuned" and performed by West himself.[6] In an interview published by GQ on August 2, The Weeknd stated that "I'd love to work with Kanye again. Especially on production". Shortly after, West posted a photo of his call log on his Instagram page which included "Abel Weeknd", leading to speculation that The Weeknd was going to be on Donda.[6] "Hurricane" was teased again on August 5, 2021 at the second listening party in Mercedes Benz Stadium with The Weeknd performing the hook.[6]

After Donda failed to release on August 6 as suggested by West's associates and major music companies, "Hurricane" appeared on Apple Music playlists and the Donda iTunes pre-order page as the second track on the album. The track was released on August 8, 2021, on streaming services such as Yandex and Line Music for a short period of time before getting pulled.[15][16]
