Club Social y Deportivo Independiente, known simply as Independiente del Valle or Independiente, is a sports club based in Sangolquí, Ecuador. Officially named and still registered at the Federación Ecuatoriana de Fútbol as Club Social y Deportivo Independiente José Terán, the team is advertised as "Independiente del Valle" for marketing purposes. The club is best known for its professional football team, which currently competes in the Ecuadorian Serie A, the top-flight league in the country.
On May 24, 2016 Independiente del Valle became Ecuador's 4th soccer team to reach the semi finals of the Copa Libertadores. This was acchomplished after defeating Pumas UNAM via penalties. The aggregate score was of 2-2 but Independiente won on penalties by a score of 5-3. Independiente had previously defeated Copa Libertadores defending champions, Argentina's River Plate in the round of 16. IDV (Independiete del Valle) will subsequently face Argentina's giant Boca Juniors for the semi final in July. If IDV make it to the final next month, then they will become Ecuador's 3rd team to make it to such instances.
