Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology, Delhi (Hindi: इंद्रप्रस्थ सूचना प्रौद्योगिकी संस्थान दिल्ली, IIIT-D) is an autonomous university in Delhi, India.[1] It is a research-oriented university with strong focus on research at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.[2]

Foundation

It was started at the Netaji Subhas Institute of Technology (NSIT) campus at Sector 3, Dwarka, New Delhi. It was founded as a State University[3] by an act of the Delhi Government (The IIIT Delhi Act, 2007)[4] in 2008, with seed support from the Government of NCT of Delhi.[5]
The institute began with its first batch of 60 students on 8 September 2008. IIIT-Delhi moved in its permanent camps in August 2012. The new campus was inaugurated by Smt. Sheila Dikshit, former Chief Minister of Delhi, in October 2012.[6]

Organization

IIIT-Delhi was created by the Government of Delhi in 2008 as per the IIIT-Delhi Act. The IIIT-Delhi Act ensures administrative and academic autonomy. The General Council is the highest body overseeing the institute, and advises the Vice-Chancellor. The Chancellor of the Institute is the Lt. Governor of Delhi, who also chairs the General Council of the Institute. The Board of Governors consists of the Director, the Chairman, four experts, two government nominees and two professors. The Board decides the salaries, the number of positions and selects the four experts. The Senate and Board can start degrees/programs. The Senate is empowered to take all academic decisions. The Institute's operational head is the Director. Overall policy making and governance rests with the Board of Governors (BOG).[7]

Full-time faculty

The Institute is managed and organised as research groups and education programs, rather than maintaining fixed departmental boundaries. However, faculty can be broadly grouped according to their disciplines of computer science and engineering (CSE), and electronics and communications engineering (ECE). The Institute is among the few Indian institutes in which all academic staff have a doctoral degree. The institute also has a number of Guest, Adjunct and Visiting faculty members in various disciplines.[11]

Admission

Since 2013, the Government of NCT of Delhi has conducted common counseling for admission to the B.Tech. programmes at IIIT-D, Delhi Technological University and Indira Gandhi Delhi Technical University. Admission to IIIT-D is based on:

(1) A candidate who has secured 80 percent or more marks in aggregate (including Physics, Chemistry and Math) and 80% or more in Mathematics in class XII from CBSE/ICSE/IB board or equivalent is eligible for applying to IIIT-D.
(2) total marks obtained in Paper 1 of Joint Entrance Examination and normalized score in Class 12th as provided by JEE (60% & 40% weightage respectively).
(3) bonus marks which are given for achievements in various areas like Olympiads, programming contest, national talent search, sports, culture, chess, etc.[12]
(4) Reservation as rule,
(5) Admissions for foreign nationals/Person of Indian Origins/Non-resident Indians will be through DASA.[13]

IIIT-Delhi was ranked 9th in India among engineering colleges in a 2014 survey by Aglasem,[14] 7th among government engineering colleges in a 2015 Dataquest survey of technical schools,[15] 35th in a survey of engineering colleges conducted by Silicon India in 2014[16] and 44th among Indian engineering colleges in a 2015 survey by EDU-RAND.[17] The institute was given an 'A' grade by the Indian government's National Assessment and Accreditation Council in May 2015.[18] The college has been rated AAAA by Careers 360 (Magazine) in India 2015.[19]

Campus

IIIT Delhi operates from its campus in Okhla Phase-III, New Delhi.[20] After its establishment in 2008, IIIT Delhi functioned from its transit campus in the library building at NSIT in Dwarka until July 2012. Its permanent campus, which is spread over 25 acres, became operational in August 2012.
The campus consists of an academic complex, a library and information center, a dining and recreation centre, and hostels. IT infrastructure includes an internet access of 1 GBPS bandwidth and a data Centre with 40 servers and 45TB storage.[21]
Manish Sisodia, deputy Chief Minister of Delhi, laid down the foundation stone for the second phase of the campus on 5 May 2015.[22] Phase II will include construction of a new academic block, an auditorium and research centers. When complete, the institute will be able to increase enrolment to 1600 and nearly half of those will be able to be accommodated in the student residences. Currently spread over an area of 33,000sqm, the new construction will utilise 70,000sqm more space.[23]

Academic Block

The Academic Complex has a total of 10 lecture halls including two lecture halls with a capacity to seat 180, one of capacity 160, two of capacity 60 and five of capacity 30. The Faculty and Research wing has a capacity of 50 faculty offices and 8 research labs, along with the PhD rooms and M.Tech labs. The administrative office and finance department offices are within the Academic block, along with the Director's Office, conference rooms, a board room, a formal seating and discussion area and faculty offices.

Hostel

IIIT Delhi provides accommodation to students wishing to reside in the hostels. At present there are two hostels, one for boys having 372 seats and another for girls having 164 seats. There is a common mess for boys and girls. The Dining and Recreation Centre houses the students' mess, a cafeteria, a common room and facilities for extracurricular activities such as a music room, table tennis and pool tables, and a gymnasium.

Library

The Library and Information Center of the Institute is housed in a separate building and is automated with the help of RFID Technology with EM security. The library is on the first floor and has a large collection of print and electronic media in areas including Computer Science, Electronics and Communications, Mathematics and Statistics, Humanities and Sciences. A common study area for students is on the ground floor and several labs are on the upper floors. There is also a reading room facility open 24 hours per day.[24]

Co-curricular activities

The Dining and Recreation centre of the institute contains a students' mess, which is spread over two floors, a cafeteria and facilities for extra co-curricular activities, such as a music room and a gymnasium.

Clubs and groups

The institute has many student clubs currently operating, including a programming club "Foobar" and a software development club "Byld". Other clubs include MadToes, AudioBytes, Ink., Trivialis, LitSoc, Tasveer, Machaan, the Adventure Club, Community Work Club, Dance Club, Design Club, Ethical Hacking Club, Literary Club, Movie-making Club, Music Club, Robotics Club, Sightseeing and Delhi Heritage (SADHA) Club, Sports Club, Quiz Club, E-Cell and Web Design and Development Club. There is also an ACM student Chapter of IIIT-D.[25]

Sports and Recreation

IIIT-Delhi provides a healthy sports culture to the student as a means of self development. Sports enthusiasts will find plenty to engage themselves at IIIT-Delhi, as the institute pays a lot of importance in giving students a fair chance to participate in activities related to sports. The institute is equipped with a number of indoor and outdoor sports facilities. The top floor of the dining block houses a gymnasium, table tennis tables, and pool tables, while chess boards and carrom boards are available in the hostel common rooms. The institute also has a multi-purpose sports field, two tennis courts, a basketball court, a volleyball field and two badminton courts. The phase-II construction plans to build a full-fledged sports complex which will house squash courts and a swimming pool as well adding to the sports resources at IIIT-Delhi.

Students can practice and play any sport anytime after classes get over in the evening. Students can issue the equipments which are provided by the institute. Playing a sport helps in keeping a basic fitness regime intact and works as a great recreational activity. Coaching for sports like basketball and tennis is held for a few days in a week in the evening to provide the players in the college team the chance to improve their game and those who enthusiastically want to learn a new sport the chance to learn the sport.

The sports council is the student driven body that takes care of all activities related to sports in the institute. It is a very active body, which is lead by the sports coordinator, who is the member of the student council. Its primary objective is to provide students a healthy sports culture. It handles the sports budget, plans out the intra-college events for all the sports like football, cricket, tennis, basketball, pool, etc which are held once in an academic year spread over two semesters. It also facilitates participation of IIIT-Delhi students in external events like marathons and inter college sports fests like Twaran (held in IIITM-Gwalior) and Spardha (held in IIT-BHU) to name a few. The sports coordinator and sports council works in coordination of the AM, student affairs.

Each sport has a coordinator who is the part of the sports council and handles activities related the specific sport including the organizing of the intra-college sports event. Trials to get into the IIIT-Delhi team are also conducted by the individual sports coordinators and students who regularly come to practice and showcase interest and skills are welcomed in the team. The sports team participates in a number of inter-college sports events and fests to integrate and connect with various institutes and provide the students the chance to represent IIIT-Delhi and showcase their skills in the domain of sports.

Student council

Student council is a main elected student’s body which supervises all clubs and festivals. It has a budget which the council distributes to various clubs. Students can form new clubs, based on interests, after formal permission of the student council.[26] The Student Senate is an elected student’s body, which focuses on academic many issues like hostels and mess Committee governance are a main part of the units.[26][clarification needed]

Student festivals

Technical festival

Esya is a two-day national level technical festival organized by the institute, with over a dozen innovative events.[27] It was first held at the institute's transit campus on 3–4 September 2011. Esya is now an integral part of IIIT-D's annual event calendar.[28]

Cultural festival

Odyssey is the institute's cultural festival, which seeks to bring out new talent and showcase the diversity of different art forms.[29] It was first held at the institute's permanent campus on 31 January - 1 February 2014. The festival includes events in the fields of music, dance, theater, literary and spoken arts, fine arts, digital arts, and quizzes.

Notable events

  • IIIT-D won the Whodunit? Challenge conducted by Microsoft Research India in February 2013.[30]
  • IIIT Delhi held the 5th IAPR International Conference on Biometrics 2012 during 29 March – 1 April 2012 in New Delhi.[31][32]
  • The institute organized IPTSE Winter School in partnership with Carnegie Mellon University with sponsorship from Microsoft Research India, during 9–23 December 2011 in which students from institutes all over India participated.[33]
  • IIIT-D held the Indo-US Teaching Workshop on effective teaching at College/University level in partnership with University at Buffalo, The State University of New York during 10–12 February 2011.[34]
