Iredell Jenkins

Iredell Jenkins (12 August 1909 – 9 April 1988) was an American philosopher and educator.

Biography

Iredell Jenkins was born in Blue Ridge Summit, Maryland, the son of James Iredell and his wife Mary (née Dobie).

He did his undergraduate and graduate work at the University of Virginia, where he took his BA in 1933, his MA in 1934 and his PhD in 1937. Between receiving these last two degrees, he studied for a year in Paris under fellowship from the American University Field Service Fellowships. After taking the PhD degree, Jenkins taught at Tulane University for nine years, then at Yale University for three years.

Jenkins was a member and Chairman of the Department of Philosophy at the University of Alabama from 1949 until his retirement in 1978.

He married Isabel Lawson Cook on December 27, 1934. They had two children.
