James Bertie, 1st Earl of Abingdon (16 June 1653 – 22 May 1699) was an English nobleman.
Biography
Bertie was the eldest son of Montagu Bertie, 2nd Earl of Lindsey by his second wife, Bridget Bertie (née Wray), 4th Baroness Norreys. He succeeded his mother as Baron Norreys on the latter's death, c. 1657. On the 30 November 1682 he was created Earl of Abingdon by letters patent. On his death in 1699 he was succeeded in his titles by his eldest son.[1]
He was Lord Lieutenant of Oxfordshire, 1674–1687 and 1689–1697; and High Steward of the City of Oxford, 1687. He was Chief Justice in Eyre, south of the Trent, 1693–1697.[1]
Family
He married firstly, Eleanora Lee, daughter of Sir Henry Lee, c. 1672.[1] They had six sons and three daughters:
- Montagu Bertie, Lord Norreys (died 31 October 1743), who became 2nd Earl of Abingdon[2]
- Hon. James Bertie (1674–1735)[3]
- Hon. Henry Bertie (1675–1735)[4]
- Hon. Robert Bertie (d. 1710)
- Capt. Hon. Peregrine Bertie (1677–1709), commanded HMS Ruby
- Rev. Hon. Charles Bertie (c.1679–1747)
- Lady Bridget Bertie (before 1683 – 13 July 1753),[5] married Richard Bulkeley, 4th Viscount Bulkeley
- Lady Anne Bertie (died 31 October 1718),[6] married Sir William Courtenay, 2nd Baronet
- Lady Mary Bertie, died unmarried
His first wife died on 31 May 1691. He married secondly, Catherine Chamberlayne, daughter of Reverend Sir Thomas Chamberlayne and Margaret, daughter of Edmund Prideaux, on 15 April 1698.[2]
