Jean-Yves Béziau (French: [bezjo]; born January 15, 1965, in Orléans, France) is a professor and researcher of the Brazilian Research Council (CNPq) at the University of Brazil in Rio de Janeiro.

Career

Béziau works in the field of logic—in particular, paraconsistent logic, the square of opposition and universal logic. He holds a Maîtrise in Philosophy from Pantheon-Sorbonne University, a DEA in Philosophy from Pantheon-Sorbonne University, a PhD in Philosophy from the University of São Paulo, a MSc and a PhD in Logic and Foundations of Computer Science from Paris Diderot University.

Béziau is the editor-in-chief of the journal Logica Universalis[1] and of the South American Journal of Logic—an online, open-access journal—as well as of the Springer book series Studies in Universal Logic.[2][3] He is also the editor of College Publication's book series Logic PhDs[4]

He has launched four major international series of events: UNILOG (World Congress and School on Universal Logic), SQUARE (World Congress on the Square of Opposition), WOCOLOR (World Congress on Logic and Religion), LIQ (Logic in Question).[5][6]

Béziau created the World Logic Day on January 14, 2019 [7] and successfully submitted the proposal [8] to have this day in the UNESCO Calendar of International days.[9]

Criticism

Controversies over his work

Béziau’s works concern paraconsistent logic, which is marginal is the field of logic. For instance, paraconsistent logic is subject to the principle of explosion, which states that from whatever premiss, one can conclude anything.

Some logicians are critical towards Béziau’s works, such as Jean-Yves Girard. Jean-Yves Girard wrote in 2020 [10] :

Philosophical logics, a euphemism for the archipelago of self-taught logics, those that only produce fishbowl truths: do not break the glass. There is even a schizophrenic variant, paraconsistency, where the fish, confined to their own bubble, only produce post-truths; it's the meta-fishbowl if one is fond of pretentiousness, a double penalty if one thinks about what is inflicted on logic.

Controversy around an article in Synthese

In 2015, the academic journal Synthese published an article in which Béziau associates "logical pluralism" with homosexuality and complains about the "absurdity" and "hypocrisy" of the "politically correct" [1].
