The Jesuit European Social Centre is an organisation of the Society of Jesus, based in Brussels, that collaborates and publishes on social issues concerning Europe. It is a separate legal entity which operates within the Jesuit Conference of European Provincials.

Activity

It engages with the EU institutions[1] and with ecclesial institutions such as the Commission of the Bishops' Conferences of the European Community (COMEC) and the Conference of European Churches (CEC).

JESC cultivates and propagates relationships, whilst developing initiatives on a variety of themes ranging from Mineral Resources (especially the issue of conflict minerals) in Africa, to European Citizenship and Ecology. In JESC’s role co-ordinating an international ecology network it produces a bi-monthly online publication, Ecojesuit. Further collaboration is undertaken with COMECE in producing a monthly journal, EuropInfos. JESC seeks to operate in concert with other Jesuit works, whilst working with the poor and marginalised. In pursuit of solidarity beyond the borders of Europe, the Jesuits participate in networks with NGOs and volunteer programs.

It is an 'Association Internationale Sans But Lucratif' under Belgian law since 29 March 2012.

History

As of 1 January 2012, JEO-OCIPE (Brussels) was restructured and became JESC. JESC is included in the EU's Transparency Register,[2] within the Section V: Organisations, which represents churches and religious communities with the identification number 73391376305-20.

Location

The centre is located on Rue Cornet in Brussels to the east of the European Parliament, south of Parc du Cinquantenaire and north of the Etterbeek municipality.
