Kunchacko Boban is an Indian film actor who has starred in over 60 Malayalam films.
Kunchacko Boban made his acting debut in Fazil's Aniyathipraavu (1997) which turned out to be a blockbuster and made him into an overnight sensation. He became a popular lead star in the late-1990s with successful films such as Mayilpeelikkavu (1998), Nakshatratharattu (1998), Niram (1999), Dhosth (2001), Swapnakoodu (2003), and Kasthooriman (2003). After a couple of commercial failures, his career took a set back in the mid-2000s. He made a comeback with Gulumaal (2009)[5] which was well received. Later, he went on to act in successful films such as Elsamma Enna Aankutty (2010), Traffic (2011), Seniors (2011),[6] Ordinary (2012), Romans (2013), Pullipulikalum Aattinkuttiyum (2013), How Old Are You? (2014), and Vettah (2016). He was awarded the Special Jury Award for his performance in Ee Snehatheerathu at the Kerala State Film Awards in 2004.
Kunchacko is the grandson of director and producer Kunchacko of Udaya Studios, and the grandnephew of Navodaya Appachan of Navodaya Studio.[7]
Career
Kunchacko began his career as lead in Aniathipravu (1997), co-starring Shalini, and directed by Fazil.[8] Following the success of Aniathipravu, Kunchacko Boban was cast in movies like Nakshathrathaarattu and Mayilpeelikkavu. In Nakshathrathaarattu, he was again cast opposite Shalini. Then he played a cameo in Fazil's Harikrishnans, which marked the reunion of Mohanlal and Mammootty after 9 years. Then came a streak of Chandamama, an average film at the box office, and he went on to do Ingane Oru Nilapakshi, Prem Poojari, Sahayathrikakku Snehapoorvam etc. He had a single success in 1999, Kamal's Niram, which featured him opposite Shalini for the final time.
After Niram, Dosth and Narendran Makan Jayakanthan Vaka, his next films included Kasthooriman, and Swapnakkoodu. The movie Ee Snehatheerathu earned him a Special Jury Award at the 2004 Kerala State Film Awards.
In 2005, he got married and took a hiatus from acting spanning over three years and had one release – Kilukkam Kilukilukkam in that term. He returned to films in 2008 with a special appearance in a song in Twenty:20 and Shafi's LollyPop.
In 2009, he appeared in Gulumal: The Escape, Mummy & Me, Sakudumbam Shyamala and Lal Jose's Elsamma Enna Aankutty. His first release in 2011 was Traffic. His later releases included Seniors, Three Kings, Sevens and Doctor Love. In 2011, he won the Youth Icon of the Year award at the Asianet Film Awards.[citation needed] In 2012 he featured in three films, Spanish Masala, Ordinary and Mallu Singh. Ordinary had 10,000 shows in theatres before reaching the 50-day mark and grossed over ₹10 crore (US$1.6M, €1.2M, or £1M as of October 2013[update]).[9] His 2013 works include Romans and 3 Dots, God for Sale: Bhakthi Prasthanam,[10] and Pullipulikalum Aattinkuttiyum directed by Lal Jose.[11]
Personal life
Kunchacko was born in Alappuzha, Kerala. He is the grandson of film producer Kunchacko of the erstwhile Udaya Studios, the first film studio in Kerala. His father Boban Kunchacko was also an actor and producer who acted in a few films produced by Udaya and his mother Molly is a housewife. He has two younger sisters, Anu and Mini.[12] Boban Kunchacko later ventured into direction with the films Palattu Kunhikkannan, Sanchari and Aazhi.
