The Australian Ambassador to Ireland is the Australian Government's foremost diplomatic representative in Ireland. The Ambassador resides in Dublin.[1] On occasions the position has had non-resident accreditation as Australia's Ambassador to the Holy See.

The position has been filled in the past by former politicians (John Herron, Brian Burke, Bob Halverson and Vince Gair), some of whom had left their previous position under a cloud. Brian Burke was subsequently recalled, tried and gaoled stealing campaign donations (he served six months before the convictions were quashed on appeal). Vince Gair's appointment was orchestrated by Prime Minister Whitlam (the "Gair Affair") in order to help the Labor Party secure control of the Senate. Gair was subsequently recalled by Foreign Minister Andrew Peacock.
