Austria-Hungary's dual kingdoms contained a melange of nationalities. Although the aces of the Luftfahrtruppen owed their military allegiance to the Empire, they came from various of the ethnic groups within the Empire. Despite the Austro-Hungarian policy of Magyarization, many citizens of the Austro-Hungarian Empire clung to their ethnic identities. The breakup of the Empire post World War I later saw the formation of independent nations from some of these ethnic groups.
