This is a list of earthquakes in 1909. Only notable magnitude 6.0 or greater earthquakes appear on the list. Lower magnitude events are included if they have caused death, injury or damage. Events which occurred in remote areas will be excluded from the list as they wouldn't have generated significant media interest All dates are listed according to UTC time. This year was marked by a large increase in the number of events that caused deaths and damage compared to 1908.

Notable events
January–March
- A magnitude 7.3 earthquake struck Markazi Province, Iran on January 23 at a depth of 15.0 km.[1] There was at least 5,500 deaths and some damage in the area.[2]
- An earthquake struck near to the city of Tetouan, in Morocco on January 29. The magnitude and depth were unknown. At least 100 people died and major damage was caused.[3]
- A magnitude 6.3 earthquake struck Sivas Province, Turkey on February 9 at a depth of 15.0 km.[4] At least 101 people were killed and major damage was reported.[5]
- A magnitude 7.6 earthquake struck Fiji on February 22 at a depth of 550.0 km.[6]
- A magnitude 6.5 earthquake struck just north of Yakushima Island, Japan on March 10 at a depth of 100.0 km.[7]
- A magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck off the southeast coast of Honshu, Japan on March 12 at a depth of 35.0 km.[8] Some damage was caused at Choshi. A tsunami that had been generated. This was a foreshock to the following event.[9]
- A magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck off the southeast coast of Honshu, Japan on March 13 at a depth of 15.0 km.[10] Further damage was caused at Choshi and a tsunami was again generated.[11]
- A magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck the Izu Islands, Japan on March 17 at a depth of 450.0 km.[12]
- A magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck Sulawesi, Indonesia on March 17 at a depth of 0.0 km. This event came within 30 minutes of the Japan earthquake.[13]
- A magnitude 6.6 earthquake struck off the southeast coast of Honshu, Japan on March 22 at a depth of 35.0 km.[14]
April–June
- A magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck Espiritu Santo, Vanuatu on April 10 at a depth of 0.0 km.[15]
- A magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck the Rat Islands, Alaska on April 10 at a depth of 0.0 km.[16]
- A magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck off the northeast coast of Taiwan on April 14 at a depth of 5.0 km.[17] Nine people died, 51 were injured and 122 homes were destroyed.[18]
- A magnitude 6.6 earthquake struck the Santarem District east of Lisbon, Portugal on April 23 at an unknown depth. Thirty people died and many homes were destroyed or damaged in the area.[19]
- A magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck the Talaud Islands, Indonesia on April 25 at a depth of 100.0 km.[20]
- An earthquake struck near the base of Mount Cameroon, Cameroon on April 26 at an unknown depth. Some damage was caused in the area which was also affected by the eruption of the volcano at this time.[21]
- A magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck the Pacific Ocean to the north of Papua New Guinea on April 27 at a depth of 0.0 km.[22]
- A magnitude 6.5 earthquake struck Yunnan Province, China on May 11 at an unknown depth. The quake resulted in 21 deaths and the destruction of many homes.[23]
- A magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck Chuquisaca Department, Bolivia on May 17 at a depth of 250.0 km.[24]
- A magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck southwest of Yamdena, Indonesia on May 30 at a depth of 100.0 km.[25]
- A magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck west central Sumatra, Indonesia on June 3 at a depth of 0.0 km.[26] Many (at least 101) people were killed and many homes were destroyed or damaged. A tsunami was detected in the area.[27]
- A magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck Atacama Region, Chile on June 8 at a depth of 0.0 km.[28]
- A magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck Vaucluse, France on June 11 at an unknown depth. Forty people were killed and some damage was caused.[29]
- A magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck Vanuatu on June 12 at a depth of 0.0 km.[30]
- A magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck the Solomon Islands on June 27 at a depth of 0.0 km.[31]

- A magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck Nurestan Province, Afghanistan on July 7 at a depth of 200.0 km.[32]
- An earthquake struck Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan on July 8 at an unknown depth. There was reportedly 10 people killed and damage in the Swat valley area.[33]
- A magnitude 6.5 earthquake struck the Sea of Okhotsk on July 13 at a depth of 250.0 km.[34]
- A magnitude 5.7 earthquake struck West Greece, Greece on July 15 at a depth of 4.0 km. At least 1 person was killed.[35]
- A magnitude 7.5 earthquake struck off the coast of Guerrero, Mexico on July 30 at a depth of 20.0 km.[36] There was extensive damage in Acapulco.[37]
- A magnitude 6.9 aftershock struck off the coast of Guerrero, Mexico on July 31 at a depth of 0.0 km.[38]
- A magnitude 6.5 earthquake struck eastern Xizang Province, China on August 4 at a depth of 0.0 km.[39]
- A magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck under Nagahama, Shiga Prefecture, Honshu, Japan on August 14 at a depth of 5.0 km.[40] Forty-one people were killed and 976 homes were destroyed in the area.[41]
- A magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck just northeast of San Jose, Costa Rica on August 16 at a depth of 0.0 km.[42]
- A magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck southeast of the Loyalty Islands, New Caledonia on August 18 at a depth of 100.0 km.[43]
- A magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck the Fox Islands (Alaska) on September 8 at a depth of 90.0 km.[44]
- A magnitude 6.6 earthquake struck the Ryukyu Islands, Japan on September 10 at a depth of 100.0 km.[45]

- A magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck Sind Province, Pakistan on October 20 at a depth of 35.0 km.[47] Two-hundred and thirty-one deaths were reported in the area as well as some damage.[48]
- A magnitude 5.8 earthquake struck Bursa Province, Turkey on October 29 at an unknown depth. Fairly extensive damage was caused.[49]
- A magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck the Tanimbar Islands, Indonesia on October 30 at a depth of 250.0 km.[50]
- A magnitude 7.5 earthquake struck Miyazaki Prefecture, Kyushu, Japan on November 10 at a depth of 150.0 km.[51]
- A magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck north of Taiwan on November 21 at a depth of 5.0 km.[52] Four people died and 14 homes were destroyed.[53]
- A magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck the Solomon Islands on December 9 at a depth of 0.0 km.[54]
- A magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck south of the Mariana Islands on December 9 at a depth of 50.0 km.[55] Some damage was caused on Guam.[56]
