Student arrest controversy

<templatestyles src="Module:Hatnote/styles.css"></templatestyles>

In 2015, a Muslim Sudanese-American high school freshman named Ahmed Mohamed was suspended and later arrested for bringing a self-made digital clock to school. One of his teachers at MacArthur thought the clock resembled a bomb and subsequently reported him. The police were brought in and thought that the device might be a bomb hoax.[2][3] Many Twitter users, online commentators and journalists, and Mohamed's family argued that he was profiled based on his name, religion, or skin color.[4][5][6][7][8] President Barack Obama wrote a tweet encouraging Mohamed, saying, "We should inspire more kids like you to like science."[7][9]

Academic ratings

In 2009, the school was rated "Academically Acceptable" by the Texas Education Agency.[10] In 2010, the school was rated "Academically Recognized" by the Texas Education Agency.[11]

Sports

In 2011, the MacArthur girls basketball team won the state tournament. Coach Suzie Oelschlegel was named the Coach of the Year by the National Federation of State High School Associations.[12]
