'Mato Correia is a village and a geographical feature (the ground) northeastern part of the island of Santiago, Cape Verde and is part of the municipality of São Miguel, it is located northwest of São Miguel and is on a branch road linking the Praia-Pedra Badejo-Tarrafal Road (EN1-ST02). Its 2010 population was 328.
The place name's etymology refers to a plateau. It is situated between two ravines with two streams, one flowing NNE to Achada Monte, the other Ribeira Principal flowing north to Porto Formoso. Further southwest is Serra da Malagueta.
Agriculture is the main industry of the settlement as to the mountainous portion.
The settlement was founded as Mato Corrêa. Not long after, the 1911 Orthography Reform made by Portugal which removed the y and became replaced with an i.[2] which included the plateau and the settlement and became Mato Correia. The older form continued to be used for a few more decades notably in Cape Verdean Creole, even comparative. The today's form in Santiago Creole (also ALUPEK) is Matu Korréa.
