Mayra Dias Gomes (born December 15, 1987) is a Brazilian author, journalist, columnist and media personality. She is the oldest daughter of Academy-Award nominated Brazilian playwright Dias Gomes and actress Bernadeth Lyzio.

Biography

She is the oldest daughter of Brazilian playwright and screenwriter Dias Gomes and actress Bernadeth Lyzio. Her Godfather is Brazilian writer Jorge Amado and her Godmother Zélia Gattai.

Dias Gomes is the author of "O Pagador de Promessas". The movie for O Pagador de Promessas was the only Brazilian movie to ever win a Golden Palm in Cannes, and the first South American to be nominated for an Oscar.

Dias Gomes died in 1999, in a car crash in São Paulo.

Published books

Mayra wrote her first novel, Fugalaça (2007), when she was seventeen. The book was written during Mayra’s battle with depression and helped her cope with it. It became an underground phenomenon – a portrait of the immediacy of a generation unable to deal with frustrations. Satine, the main character, is the author’s alter ego, who just like the narrator, suffered with her father’s sudden death during early years, and found herself in a world of drugs, obsessive passions and rock’n'roll. Upon release, Fugalaça caused national controversy, and was compared to books such as “Christiane F”, and Lolita Pille’s “Paris 75016: Hell’s Diary”. Mayra was featured in most major Brazilian newspapers, magazines and TV shows due to this release.

Her second novel, One Thousand and One Nights of Silence, came out in 2009. It tells the story of a lonely girl named Clara, who is in search of a true human bond. Abandoned by her biological parents, left on the altar by her fiancé, and an orphan from her adoptive mother, she lives a life without meaning. She is unable to join society and suffers from insomnia. In a brave search for a human bond, she will go through different sceneries such as a job on a flower shop and a city devastated by drugs and prostitution.

Her third book, "Dias Gomes" released in 2012, is a compilation of interviews given by her father, Brazilian writer Dias Gomes, from the 60's to his death.

Journalism career

She started her journalism career working as a music reporter for the largest Brazilian newspaper, Folha de S.Paulo and eventually became a biweekly addition, writing a column called “On The Road”. Later she started writing about cinema.

Mayra was a collaborator and host for Spin Earth, SPIN Magazine’s website, and has been published in Teen Vogue, Contigo!, Isto É Gente, Viagem e Turismo, Mymag, Época, Capricho and Sexy magazine. In 2009 she hosted a literature show on MTV Brasil.

Currently, she is a reporter for Rolling Stone and VH1 Brasil.

Media personality

Mayra has been the star of many editorials and posed for Playboy Brazil in 2009. In 2008 she did a five-page spread for VIP Magazine. She is also Sexy magazine's July cover, and has a 23-page nude spread in the edition. In 2011 she posed topless for Inked magazine.

Mayra appears in music videos by the bands Bastardz and Brothers of Brazil.

She was the star of the campaign of the 2011 Los Angeles Brazilian Film Festival and one of the celebrities invited to attend the Marine Corps Ball in 2011. She attended the ball in San Diego. Other celebrities who attended include Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis. She was a host at The Academy Awards red carpet with Dr. Robert Rey. In 2013, she was the star of shoe stylist Fernando Pire's campaign.

Personal life

Mayra Dias Gomes is married to musician and actor Coyote Shivers. She was taken to the altar by Dee Dee Ramone's widow, Barbara Ramone.
