Megalaima is a genus of Asian barbets (family Megalaimidae). The name means ‘large throat’, from the Greek mega (μέγας, ‘large, great’) and laimos (λαιμός, ‘throat’).[1]

They make up the bulk of this newly verified clade, which was hitherto united with the other barbets in the Capitonidae. The latter, however, are at least as close to the toucans as to the other lineages of barbets, making it necessary to split up the old paraphyletic "Capitonidae".
