Location

Melrose Hill is a small neighborhood located in the Hollywood Studio District. It is located north of Melrose Ave., South of Santa Monica Blvd., East of Western Ave., and West of the 101. (also known as the Hollywood Freeway). Melrose Hill is home to the Lemon Grove Recreation Center, and the Melrose Hill HPOZ Houses various expensive historic homes.

Restaurants and eateries and stores in Melrose Hill are usually described as locations in East Hollywood.

History

Because a few residents of Melrose Hill did not want to join the East Hollywood Neighborhood Council (not wanting to deal with the label "East" Hollywood, which recalls "East Los Angeles", and those few upper income residents on Melrose Hill street and Marathon street were worried about their property values), Melrose Hill is not part of the East Hollywood Neighborhood Council, which currently includes only neighborhoods north of the 101 freeway. However culturally and geographically, Melrose Hill is part of East Hollywood, and other maps showing the boundaries of East Hollywood, for example this map from the L.A. Times' website [1], includes all of Melrose Hill in East Hollywood.

Though the area's boundaries on Melrose Avenue have recently been designated by small road signs, few outsiders are familiar with it by name and consider it part of either Little Armenia or Koreatown, regions which border it on the north and south respectively. In January 2003, Los Angeles magazine deemed it one of the city's "10 Great Neighborhoods."

The City of Los Angeles has designated it a historic preservation overlay zone, to help preserve its excellent historic homes dating from 1911 forward.[1]

Education

Melrose Hill is within the Los Angeles USD.[2]
