Monte Vista High School is a comprehensive public high school located in Danville, California. Monte Vista is a National Blue Ribbon school, as well as a California Distinguished School and fully WASC accredited. The school is located in the San Ramon Valley, approximately 35 miles east of San Francisco. The school mascot is a Mustang. It serves around 2274 students from grades 9–12. The current principal is Kevin Ahern, along with assistant principals, Megan Keefer, Elizabeth Pagano, and John Paul Ballou. Its primary sports rival is San Ramon Valley High School.

Sports

Monte Vista Mustangs compete in the East Bay Athletic League (EBAL) of the CIF North Coast Section (NCS). In 2014, the Monte Vista varsity boys basketball team, led by head coach Nick Jones, set numerous school records. After winning the EBAL and NCS titles, the Mustangs defeated Centennial High School (Corona, California) 66-55 to win the California Division 1 state championship. This was the first state championship in the school's history and the first state championship for a Contra Costa County, California public school since Northgate High School (Walnut Creek, California) won the Division III boys basketball state championship in 1995. The 2013-2014 boys basketball team finished the season 32-1, and were ranked 9th in the nation and 2nd in the state of California, according to MaxPreps.

Budget misappropriation

In 2007, after a parent complaint, a district internal and an outside audit found that funds raised by graduating classes were used for school improvement projects by administrators. No misappropriation of funds was found or alleged; all funds were used for the school. Administrators produced student body minutes for items approved by the students and from previous class officers. The Contra Costa Times printed a retraction and correction August 6, 2010 for previous misstatements by the newspaper suggesting misappropriation by administrators.
