National Airways Corporation is a commercial aviation company with its head office on the grounds of Lanseria Airport in Johannesburg, South Africa.[1] The company offers a range of products and services for fixed-wing aircraft and helicopter markets, including aircraft sales, maintenance, parts, value added products, aircraft charter, international operations and pilot training. NAC Operations is the flight operations and charter division. NAC operates a South African network of offices, its main base is Lanseria Airport, with office hubs at Cape Town International Airport, Durban, Grand Central Airport, Wonderboom Airport and Rand Airport.[2] NAC also has businesses further afield in Botswana Sir Seretse Khama International Airport, Gaborone and internationally, Awesome Flight Logistics in Perth, Australia and Specialized Aircraft Services in Wichita, USA.

History

The general aviation company was established in 1946 and started operations on 25 May 1946. 1 July 1999, Imperial Holdings, a mobility group listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, purchased a 62% share in NAC in 1999. At the same time Streamline Aviation merged into NAC to form NAC Charter. The airline is owned by Imperial Holdings (62%) and management (38%) and has 320 employees (at March 2007).[2]

Accidents and incidents

  • On 6 October 1970, Douglas C-47B ZS-DKR crashed near Germiston following the failure of the port engine shortly after take-off from Rand Airport on an executive flight. Three of the 11 people on board were killed.[5]
