Odense University Hospital (OUH) is the largest[citation needed] and most specialized hospital[citation needed][clarification needed] in Southern Denmark. In terms of beds it is also the largest hospital unit in the whole country.[citation needed]

OUH is both Odense's and Funen's largest single workplace (Odense Municipality employs significantly more, but they are spread over many addresses). It has an operating budget of just under 3,5 billion DKK (2006) and employs 7.700 staff, equivalent to 6.100 full time employees. Of these, 1.300 are medical doctors. Until 2007 the hospital was operated by Funen county, but due to governmental restructuring, it has since been driven by the Region of Southern Denmark.

OUH acts as a local and acute hospital in the northern part of Funen, but takes patients from all over Denmark, as it has highly specialized units within hand replantation surgery and special neuro-radiological intervention. In addition to reading Driver, OUH has an extensive research activity, and annually trains 2.500 people as part of either basic or continuing education.

The hospital tower block, listed[clarification needed] in 1960, is 57 metres (187 ft) high, has 15 floors and is Odense's tallest building.[citation needed] Hospital Pharmacy Fyn is located at the university hospital. From the university hospital area there is a walkway to the Odense Sygehus Station operated by Svendborgbanen.

OUH has for several years had the organizational Middelfart Hospital under it, but since 2008 also the former hospitals under the organizational name Funen Hospital, which are the County of Funen's smaller hospitals, became part of OUH. This concerns Svendborg Hospital, Dagklinik Faaborg, Hospital Unit Nyborg, Hospital Unit Ringe and Hospital Unit Aero.

The Region of Southern Denmark in 2007 published plans to build a new large teaching hospital near the University of Southern Denmark (SDU) in the south of Odense. The new hospital will be one of the most modern and advanced hospitals in northern Europe, cost around 6.3 billion DKK in construction and is expected to be completed in 2018. The new OUH will be physically connected to the Faculty of Health Sciences by a covered bridge, and will be a part of the large construction endeavour by Odense municipality and the Region of Southern Denmark to modernize and expand the scientific part of the city.
