Open Road Films (sometimes written as Open Road or ORF) is an American film production company based in Los Angeles, California. It was launched in March 2011 by the two largest U.S. theatrical exhibitors, AMC Theatres and Regal Entertainment Group.

Company history

AMC Entertainment and Regal Entertainment Group hired Tom Ortenberg, as CEO. He is a former executive of Lionsgate and The Weinstein Company.[2] On April 13, 2011 Tom Ortenberg hired Jason Cassidy (president of marketing), Elliott Kleinberg (General Counsel and executive vice president of operations and business affairs), Steven Andriuzzo (chief financial officer), and Ben Cotner (senior vice president of acquisitions).[3] The studio released its first film, Killer Elite, on September 23, 2011.[4] Killer Elite was directed by Gary McKendry and starring Jason Statham, Clive Owen and Robert De Niro.

Open Road's release of Spotlight (film) received 6 Academy Award nominations for the year 2015 and became the one of the biggest surprise winners for Best Picture in recent memory at the 2016 Oscars ceremony taking home two, which included another for Best Original Screenplay. This win became the first for the company.[5]

Open Road titles are distributed in the home entertainment market by Universal Studios Home Entertainment.[6] On June 28, 2011 Open Road Films signed a pay-TV deal with Netflix,[7] which expires in 2016. On October 1, 2013, the studio signed a new pay-TV deal with Showtime that begins in 2017 and expires in 2020.[8] On February 10, 2014, Open Road extended its ancillaries deal with USHE.[9]
