Partners In Research (PIR) is a registered Canadian charity founded in 1988 to help Canadians understand the significance, accomplishments and promise of biomedical research in advancing health and medicine. Since its genesis, PIR has broadened its scope to encompass Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) as fields of discovery and study for Canadian students.[1]

Partners In Research (PIR) powers five educational programs:

Virtual Researcher On Call

In 2006, PIR introduced Virtual Researcher On Call (VROC). Virtual Researcher On Call (VROC) is PIR’s primary outreach project. VROC is an educational support tool focused on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) with a goal to encourage and inspire students to continue in STEM studies toward future career opportunities. The way VROC does that is by connecting students with academic researchers from across Canada using videoconferencing technology. VROC is founded on the belief that education is a team sport requiring participation from a diverse, driven network composed of teachers, researchers, professionals and inquisitive minds. Through VROC, this community engages students, inspires learning and presents a wide variety of career opportunities.[1]

PIR (Partners In Research) Live Event

PIR Live Event was launched in Fall 2014. PIR Live Events engage classrooms across Canada in dynamic online discussions about various STEM topics and introduce them to a range of STEM professionals. During PIR live events, a guest speaker from a Canadian post-secondary institution (either college or university) is typically invited to discuss their areas of expertise in hopes of educating the general public. Teachers and their students can join a PIR Live Event by tuning into a live stream and tweeting questions to #askPIR. [2]

Sanofi Biolgenius Canada

Sanofi Biogenius Canada is a national biotechnology research competition founded in 1993 to help advance careers in science among high school students. Every year nine regional competitions are held. The winners of these regional competitions travel to a national competition to present their research and compete to be the Canadian representative to Bio International held in the US. High school students submit research proposals to a scientific evaluation committee. Students are matched with a biotechnology researcher who will mentor the student. [3]

PIR (Partners In Research) National Awards

PIR National Awards recognize and honour excellence in Canadian research as well as commitment to promoting the benefit of one’s research through public outreach. The Awards are presented at the annual PIR National Awards event. [4]

PIR (Partners In Research) TV

PIR TV is a collection of videos dedicated to inspiring students to become the next generation of champions in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). [5]

The executive director of PIR is Brent Peltola.[3]
