Peter Mata'utia (pronounced ma-ta-oo-tee-a)[2] (born 12 November 1990) is an Australian professional rugby league footballer for the St. George Illawarra Dragons of the National Rugby League. He primarily plays at fullback, centre and wing.
Background
Born in Bankstown, New South Wales, Mata'utia is of Samoan descent and played his junior football for the Bankstown Cougars, before moving to Newcastle, New South Wales at a young age and playing for Raymond Terrace. He was then signed by the Newcastle Knights.
Playing career
From 2008 to 2010, Mata'utia played for the Newcastle Knights' NYC team, scoring over 300 points in 44 games.[3]
In 2008, Mata'utia played for the Australian Schoolboys.
In 2009, Mata'utia played for Samoa in the 2009 Pacific Cup.
In 2011, Mata'utia moved on to the Knights' New South Wales Cup team, Central Coast Centurions.
In Round 11 of the 2011 NRL season, Mata'utia made his NRL debut for the Knights against the Sydney Roosters.[4] He scored a try on debut.
On 17 June 2011, Mata'utia re-signed with the Knights on a 2-year contract, turning down offers from three rival teams.[5]
In July 2012, Mata'utia was admitted to hospital after suffering a crushed larynx in a New South Wales Cup game for the Knights. He received an emergency tracheostomy after he was unable to breathe during a scan on his neck.[6] He was ruled out for the rest of the 2012 season.
In July 2013, Mata'utia played for the New South Wales Residents against the Queensland Residents.[7]
On 23 August 2013, Mata'utia signed a 2-year contract with the St. George Illawarra Dragons starting in 2014.[8]
On 22 September 2013, Mata'utia was named at centre in the 2013 New South Wales Cup Team of the Year.[9]
In May 2014, Peter played for Samoa in the 2014 Pacific Rugby League International.
On 8 September 2014, Mata'utia was named in the Samoa train-on squad for the 2014 Four Nations,[10] later making the final 24-man squad for Samoa,[11][12] however he was unable to compete in the tournament due to passport issues.[13]
On 3 May 2015, Mata'utia again played for the New South Wales Residents, this time alongside his brother Chanel.[14]
Personal life
Mata'utia is the older brother of Newcastle Knights players Chanel Mata'utia, Pat Mata'utia and Sione Mata'utia.[15]
