Tony Bennett & Lady GaGa, Cheek to Cheek Tour 06 edited.jpg

Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta (born March 28, 1986), better known by her stage name Lady Gaga, is an American pop singer-songwriter. After enrolling at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts in 2003 and later performing in the rock music scene of New York City's Lower East Side, she signed with Streamline Records, an imprint of Interscope Records. During her early time at Interscope, she worked as a songwriter for fellow label artists and captured the attention of recording artist Akon who, recognizing her vocal abilities, signed her to his own label, KonLive Distribution.

Gaga rose to prominence with her debut album The Fame (2008), a critical and commercial success which produced global chart-topping singles such as "Just Dance" and "Poker Face". A follow-up EP, The Fame Monster (2009), was met with a similar reception and released the successful singles "Bad Romance", "Telephone", and "Alejandro". Her second full-length album Born This Way was released in 2011, topping the charts in more than 20 countries, including the United States, where it sold over one million copies in its first week. The album produced number one single "Born This Way". Her third album Artpop, released in 2013, topped the US charts and included the successful singles "Applause" and "Do What U Want". In 2014, Gaga released a collaborative jazz album with Tony Bennett titled Cheek to Cheek, which became her third consecutive number one in the United States.

The Monster Ball Tour was the second worldwide and the first headlining concert tour by American recording artist Lady Gaga. Staged in support of her album The Fame Monster (2009) and comprising a set list of songs from that and her debut album The Fame (2008), the tour visited arenas and stadiums from 2009 through 2011. Described as "the first-ever pop electro opera" by Gaga, the tour was announced in October 2009 after an intended joint concert tour with hip-hop artist Kanye West was suddenly canceled. The Monster Ball Tour commenced four days after the release of The Fame Monster, in November 2009.

A revision of the tour occurred after only a few months of performances, due to Gaga's concern that the original version was constructed within a very short span of time. The stage of the original show looked like a frame, comparable to that of a hollowed-out television set. Since The Fame Monster dealt with the paranoias Gaga had faced, the main theme of the original shows became human evolution, while elements of the canceled tour with West still included in some parts. From 2010 and onwards, the revamped shows had a New York theme and portrayed a story set in the city, where Gaga and her friends got lost and had to find their way to "the Monster Ball". Both versions of the show were divided into five segments, with the last being the encore. Each of them featured Gaga in new outfits, singing songs related to the concept of the segment, and was followed by a video interlude.

Contemporary critics commending Gaga's singing abilities and sense of style and fashion. They were also impressed by the theatricality of the show, comparing it to the tours of artists like Madonna. Monster Ball was a commercial success, with sold-out shows and demand for tickets prompting organizers to add more dates to the itinerary. It ultimately grossed a total of US $227.4 million, from 200 reported shows, drawing an estimated audience of 2.5 million. The Monster Ball Tour became the highest-grossing tour by a debut headlining artist, and one of the highest grossing tours of all time. At the 2010 Billboard Touring Awards, Gaga won the Breakthrough Performer Award, as well as the Concert Marketing & Promotion Award, the latter being an acknowledgment of her partnership with sponsor Virgin Mobile.

The Fame is the debut studio album by American recording artist Lady Gaga. It was released on August 19, 2008 by Interscope Records. Gaga worked with several producers on the album, mainly RedOne, Martin Kierszenbaum, and Rob Fusari. The songs are mostly inspired by Gaga's love of fame in general, and deal with the intricacies of a rich and famous lifestyle, visualized by her. Musically, the album drew inspiration from '80s electropop and synthpop while incorporating dance music and clear hooks.

The album received mostly positive reviews, with critics commending Gaga's ability to discover a melodious hook and comparing her vocal abilities to those of Gwen Stefani. The album went to number-one in countries such as the United Kingdom, Canada, Austria, Germany, Switzerland and Ireland. In the United States the album peaked at number two on the Billboard 200 and topped Billboard's Dance/Electronic Albums chart. Worldwide, the album has sold over 12 million copies.

The first two singles from The Fame, "Just Dance" and "Poker Face", were both international hits, with "Just Dance" topping the charts in over six countries, including the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States. "Poker Face" was able to peak at number-one in almost all the major musical markets, and it became her second consecutive number-one hit on the Hot 100 chart. Other singles released includes "Eh, Eh (Nothing Else I Can Say)", "LoveGame", and "Paparazzi". Gaga promoted the album by performing the songs in a number of live appearances, including her first headlining The Fame Ball Tour. The Fame is featured as a bonus disc on the deluxe edition of Gaga's EP, The Fame Monster.

The Fame has won a number of awards, since it was released. The album, and the songs from it were nominated in total of six Grammy Awards, including in the Album of the Year category. It went on to win the Grammy Award for Best Electronic/Dance Album and the single "Poker Face" won Best Dance Recording. On February 16, 2010, it also won Best International Album at the 2010 BRIT Awards.

"Applause" is a song by American recording artist Lady Gaga, taken from her third studio album, Artpop (2013). Written and produced by Gaga and DJ White Shadow, the song was released on August 12, 2013 by Interscope Records as the album's lead single. Originally intended for a release through mainstream and rhythmic airplay on August 19, 2013, it was rush-released a week earlier after two snippets of the song were leaked online on August 10. Details of the song were revealed throughout 2013 as Gaga tweeted its lyrics in early 2013. Written while touring for her Born This Way Ball, "Applause" was almost left out of Artpop.

Musically, the song contains electropop and Eurodance. Lyrically, it deals with how she is dependent on her fans' adoration, while her vocals on the track have been compared by music critics to those of Annie Lennox of the Eurythmics and David Bowie. While, overall, the song received generally positive reviews, contemporary music commentators incessantly compared the track to Katy Perry's "Roar", due to the proximity and nature of their releases. Pervasively, the commercial competition between the two songs has been the subject of many news articles and musical critiques.

"Applause" was commercially successful. It became Gaga's twelfth top-ten (and ninth top-five) single in the United States, peaking at number four on the Billboard Hot 100. The record reached number-one in Lebanon, Greece, Hungary, South Korea, and Spain, peaking within the top five in the United Kingdom, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, and Wallonia, while also peaking within the top 10 in over 15 other markets.

To promote the record, Gaga performed at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards, with many other notable live performances following. Additionally, Gaga sported the dramatic and colorful makeup employed on the single's cover art as a promotional tool on the day of release and after, encouraging her fans to wear it as well. The concept was inspired by a scene from the track's music video, which saw an official release on August 19. While on Good Morning America, Gaga premiered the video on the screens in Times Square. Beforehand, Gaga released an impromptu lyric video that she shot herself at the Mickys' drag nightclub.
