Punjai Puliampatti is a municipality in Sathyamangalam Taluk, Erode district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. As of 2011, the town had a population of 18,967.

Geography

It is an important Municipal Town in North-Western Part of Erode District and it belongs to Sathyamangalam Taluk and Bhavanisagar Panchayat Union, it also situated nearby Coimbatore District Border. The Town which is Grade II Municipality.

The nearest Major City is “Coimbatore” which is 40 km away from Punjai Puliampatti. It is well connected by three main roads (major district roads) passing through the center of the town. One connecting Coimbatore and Sathyamangalam and another connecting Puliampatti and Mettupalayam, Puliampatty and Tiruppur, by crossing N.H.209 (National Highways).

According to 2011 census, Punjaipuliampatti had a population of 18,967 with a sex-ratio of 1,003 females for every 1,000 males, much above the national average of 929.[2] A total of 1,673 were under the age of six, constituting 888 males and 785 females. Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes accounted for 20.4% and .04% of the population respectively. The average literacy of the town was 74.4%, compared to the national average of 72.99%.[2] The town had a total of : 5480 households. There were a total of 8,629 workers, comprising 184 cultivators, 500 main agricultural labourers, 553 in house hold industries, 6,794 other workers, 598 marginal workers, 11 marginal cultivators, 48 marginal agricultural labourers, 40 marginal workers in household industries and 499 other marginal workers.[3] As per the religious census of 2011, Punjaipuliampatti (M) had 90.04% Hindus, 7.66% Muslims, 2.14% Christians, 0.01% Sikhs, 0.01% Buddhists, 0.0% Jains, 0.15% following other religions and 0.0% following no religion or did not indicate any religious preference.[4]

INFRASTRUCTURE

It is well connected by three main roads (major district roads) passing through the center of the town. One connecting Coimbatore and Sathyamangalam and another connecting Puliampatty and Mettupalayam, Puliampatty and Tiruppur, by crossing N.H.209 (National Highways). The Primary and tertiary activities are the Main Function of P.Puliampatty town. This town can be considered as Bi-Functional Town. The Work force Constitutes about 42% in Industries workers, 18% in small Industries (Small Scale and Cottage) and 12% enhanced in agriculture and 28% in trading & other activities. There are major industries within the jurisdiction of the local body. The town serves as an important source of supply for Agricultural in-puts and implements of Tobacco and others service to the adjoining areas.

Punjai Puliampatti is having three different types of soils viz. black loam, red loam and red sand. The major portion is covered by red loam, and then comes red sand and black loam. The percentages of the Red loam, Red sand and Black loams are 70%, 10% and 20% respectively.

In general, the soil in and around the town is of fertile nature and is good for agriculture purposes.

The temperature here is moderate throughout the year except during summer. The average rainy days are 40 in a year. It is exceptionally dry and its rainfall is scanty, uncertain and not well distributed.

There is one old hill temple dedicated to Lord Muruga at Othimalai by names, at a distance of 4.0 kilometer from the town centre. At a distance of 5.0 kilometer from the town, there is another old “Temple Karivaradharaja Perumal" at Puliampatty on the way to Tiruppur. And Nearest old famous Temple namely "Bannari Mariyamman Temple" in Bannari at a distance of 30 KM from the Town, where “Fire Walking Ceremony” is held during March – April every year.

Temple Annual car festival" in Irumbarai is conducted here in the month of January for three days. This temple attracts large gathering from the surrounding places during festival time.

Near by 15 KM from the Town, a famous Temple "Then Tirupathi" Lord Venkateswara Temple in Sirumugai. same like the "Tirupathi Tirumalai" in Andhra Pradesh.

There is a famous Christian Church "St.Lourd Mary Church", in Lourthupuram, at a distance of 4 km from the town. There is an amazing wonder of the "Dryness water" which is a "holy water" for the Christianity people and also Annual car festival is celebrated in the month of February.

1. Bannari - Historical Temple – Bannari Mariyamman 2. Then Tirupathi – Temple – Lord Venkateswara 3. Bhavanisagar – Dam – Picnic Spot, Shooting Spot 4. Kodiveri – Bhavani River Mini Dam – Picnic Spot, Shooting Spot, Historical Place.

Economy

The main source is trading and small businesses apart from agriculture. In addition, there are many spinning mills and weaving units in and around the town. Many others travel every day to Coimbatore for work and studies. It is an Industrial area which includes around 25 Textile Mills. The work force Constitutes about 42% in Industries workers, 18% in small Industries (Small Scale and Cottage) and 12% enhanced in agriculture and 28% in trading & other activities. There are major Industries within the Jurisdiction of the local body.

It has a weekly Sandy (Market), which is the second place in Tamil Nadu. Its area is 12.75 Acres, which is running from this Sandy, and Annual Income is 23.75 Lakhs for the Municipality.
