Queen Elizabeth II Barracks is a military installation in Strensall, North Yorkshire.
History
Strensall Camp, which covers about 1800 acres and stretches to Towthorpe (to the west), was formed by the War Office in 1884 for training troops. The barracks were renamed Queen Elizabeth II Barracks in the 1950s and went on to become the regional centre for infantry training as the Yorkshire Brigade Depôt in 1960.[1] The barracks then became the depot of the King's Division in 1968.[2]
On 11 June 1974, the Provisional Irish Republican Army planted and exploded devices at the camp, though there was no loss of life.[3]
The camp is now the home of Headquarters 2 Medical Brigade, 34 Field Hospital, HQ Strensall Training Centre, 4 Cadet Training Team, Army Medical Services (Force Troops Command), the King's Division Recruiting Team, Army Youth Team, The Garrison Dental Centre, Military Police Guarding Service Defence Platoon, HQ Yorkshire (North and West) Army Cadet Force and other smaller units.[4]
