Ray Jones is a municipal politician who currently serves as Councillor of Ward 5 in Calgary, Alberta. He was elected in the 1993 byelection for Ward 5.

Awards

In recognition of his significant contributions to compatriots, community and to Canada, Jones was the recipient of the Commemorative Medal for the 125th Anniversary of the Confederation of Canada (1867–1992) in 1993. In 2003, he received the Queen's Golden Jubilee Award for Community Service, 2005 he received the Alberta Centennial Medal and in 2012 the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal.[1]

Career before politics

Prior to being elected in 1993, Jones served as the president of Rundle Community Association for eight years.[1]

Electoral record

1993 byelection

Jones first won the right to represent Ward 5 in a massive byelection in September, 1993. There were a total of 23 candidates running, and Jones took 2,545 of the votes, compared with 1,328 for [Suzanne Sawyer] and 760 for third-place Ivan Weleschuk.[2]

1998 general election

Jones was re-elected with 80% of the vote.[3]

2001 municipal election

Jones won re-election taking 69% of the votes.[4]

2004 municipal election

Jones won re-election taking 60% of the votes against a slate of 3 other candidates.[5]

2007 municipal election

Jones was re-elected by a wide margin, capturing 80% of the votes in his Ward.[6]

2010 municipal election

Jones was reelected to serve Ward 5 in the 2010 election, taking 62% of the votes.[7]

2013 municipal election

Jones won the 2013 election by capturing 73% of the votes.[8]
