Biography

Ricardo Guilherme Dicke was born in Vila Raizama, Chapada dos Guimarães, the son of a German father and a Brazilian mother. Dicke was the eldest of seven children. He moved to Cuiabá when he was five and to Rio de Janeiro when he was 29. He studied philosophy at UFRJ, specialising in Merleau-Ponty, and did a master's degree in the philosophy of art. Dicke published his first book, Paths of Sun and Moon, in the early 1960s. In 1968 he published The God of Cain; the book came fourth in the Walmap Literature Prize the previous year; the jury included Guimarães Rosa, Jorge Amado and Antonio Olinto. Between 1973 and 1975, he worked as a proofreader for the newspaper O Globo. He returned to Cuiabá, where he worked as a teacher and continued to write novels.

Although little publicised during his lifetime, Dicke's work had famous admirers, such as Glauber Rocha and Hilda Hilst.[1]
