Ruby’s Diner is a restaurant chain that reproduces the look and feel of the classic American Diner. Bright red vinyl booths, white Formica tables, soda fountains, milkshakes, burgers, antique Coca-Cola posters and commercial art echo the Swing Era of the 1940s. While the basic decor remains the same for every Ruby's Diner, creative touches were added to many of the Ruby’s Diners by developing modified themes to fit the local area. For example, the Ruby’s AeroDiner in Laguna Hills (located near the former El Toro Marine Air Base) features a collection of miniature World War II aircraft that actually “fly” through the restaurant on a track. The Huntington Beach pier location has a “Surf City” theme complete with surfboards and other authentic surfing memorabilia. And Ruby’s Super Chief Diner which is walking distance from the famous San Juan Capistrano train station has scale model trains running through the restaurant.
Ruby’s Diner serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, and the menu includes classic American Diner fare of hamburgers, french fries, chili and shakes along with soups, salads, sandwiches and vegetarian offerings.
History
Ruby's Diner first opened on December 7, 1982 in a converted bait shop at the end of the Balboa Pier in Newport Beach, California. On that day founders Doug Cavanaugh and Ralph Kosmides worked the grill and cashier station and pulled in $63.[1] Ruby's Diner now has 48 family-friendly locations in Southern California, Pennsylvania and Hawaii; along with airport locations in Newark, Houston, Las Vegas and Los Angeles.[2]
Ruby’s Diner has locations on four historic Southern California piers including Balboa Pier, Huntington Beach Pier, Oceanside and Malibu.[3] Ruby’s Diner also has locations at Angel Stadium of Anaheim, home of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and Petco Park, home of the San Diego Padres. Ruby’s Diner newest location is located in the historic Five Points area of Anaheim and includes a 12-car drive-in served by roller-skating servers.[4]
Origin of the Ruby girl
Ruby[5] is the mother of founder Doug Cavanaugh and the Ruby girl cheesecake character was derived from a photograph taken of Ruby while cheerleading for Fremont High School in Los Angeles.[6] In recognition of Ruby, every Ruby’s Diner location has a picture of Ruby’s high school graduation picture near the cash register.
