San Jose ⁱ/sæn ˈdʒoʊz/ is a village in Logan County and Mason counties, Illinois, United States, founded in 1858. The population was 642 at the 2010 census.

History

The town of San Jose was founded in 1858. The village was named by Alexander W. Morgan. San Jose is known as the Tri-County village, having its town limits in Mason, Logan and Tazewell counties. It has long been known as a farming community and still prides itself on the same. The Village of San Jose recently hosted its Sesquicentennial on June 27–29, 2008.

The town of San Jose is located partly in Mason County and partly in Prairie Creek township of Logan County, while the Tazewell County line is but one mile north of the town. Three-fourths of the village is in Mason County, the remaining one-fourth being in Logan County. The Logan County portion of the village is comprised in Isaac C. Brown's addition laid out in 1858, containing four blocks and Crabb and Linbarger's. addition of three blocks laid out in 1868. The additions were surveyed by. Bentley Buxton. San Jose was incorporated as a village under the general law June 12, 1876, and has a population of about 500. It is located on both the Jacksonville and Peoria branches of the Chicago & Alton railroad.

According to the 2010 census, San Jose has a total area of 0.5 square miles (1.29 km²), all land.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 696 people, 261 households, and 199 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,361.3 people per square mile (526.9/km²). There were 274 housing units at an average density of 535.9 per square mile (207.4/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 99.28% White, 0.29% African American and 0.43% Native American. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.72% of the population.

There were 261 households out of which 37.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.8% were married couples living together, 11.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 23.4% were non-families. 19.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.67 and the average family size was 3.05.

In the village the population was spread out with 27.0% under the age of 18, 7.9% from 18 to 24, 29.3% from 25 to 44, 19.8% from 45 to 64, and 15.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 89.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.6 males.

The median income for a household in the village was $39,028, and the median income for a family was $45,104. Males had a median income of $37,083 versus $22,500 for females. The per capita income for the village was $18,110. About 2.7% of families and 2.9% of the population were below the poverty line, including 1.9% of those under age 18 and none of those age 65 or over.
