It runs from Highway 964 near Stony Rapids until a dead end near Riou Lake. Highway 966 is about 30 km (19 mi.) long. Like Highway 964, it is cut off from the rest of the province for part of the year, except in winter when a seasonal road forms allowing a connection to Saskatchewan Highway 905, leading to the south.

The 2010 Official Road Map of Saskatchewan no longer shows this highway and the nearby Highway 964 is now shown as being part of Highway 905.
