– The upgraded Lysaker Station opened.[1]

- – The Flytoget airport express train services extended two of its six hourly services to Drammen Station.[2]
- September 9

– First section of Dubai Metro Red Line, covering 10 stations, was ceremonially inaugurated at 9:09:09 PM on September 9, 2009, by Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Ruler of Dubai,[3] with the line opening to the public at 6 AM on September 10.[4] The fully automated Dubai Metro is the first urban rail network in the Arabian Peninsula.[5] More than 110,000 people, nearly 10 per cent of Dubai's population, used the Metro in its first two days of operation.[6]

– Agreement signed for China Railways' Dalian Locomotive & Rolling Stock Works to supply 20 diesel locomotives to KiwiRail in New Zealand, for delivery between May and August 2010, the first locomotives supplied by the People's Republic of China to a developed country.[7]

– Two steam hauled passenger trains of the narrow gauge heritage Radebeul–Radeburg railway (German: Lößnitzgrundbahn) collide head-on, injuring 121 people, four of them seriously. The accident occurred during a gala celebrating the 125th anniversary of the railway's opening; as part of the gala, the railway had doubled the number of trains operating for the weekend. After the accident, all trains on the line were annulled and the gala was cancelled. Investigations into the cause of the accident are ongoing.[8] See also: 2009 Lößnitzgrundbahn head-on collision.
- The Powerhouse Museum's 3265 was recommissioned at Sydney terminal station with a ceremony and shuttle rides as far as Bankstown.
