Shock Records (now part of Shock Entertainment[1]) is Australia's largest independent record label, operating for 24 years, releasing independent music to the Australian marketplace.

Current major music partners include Cooking Vinyl (including Marilyn Manson, The Prodigy, Groove Armada, and Underworld); Sunday Best (Kitty, Daisy & Lewis); Rise Records (Of Mice & Men, Miss May I, Hot Water Music); Vagrant (including Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros); Sumerian (Asking Alexandria, I See Stars, Veil of Maya); and Rough Trade (including Belle and Sebastian). The distributor also works on a number of one-off deals with artists including Bring Me the Horizon, Parkway Drive, All That Remains, Alexisonfire, Crystal Castles and The Black Keys.[2]

History

The three founding members had all previously worked in music retail or distribution: Williams for a Melbourne distribution company called "Musicland", Falvo for Exposure Records and McGhee for Greville Records.

Overview

Shock Records distributes, markets and exports CDs by Australian artists in all styles of music. The company sells DVDs, music, computer games and other entertainment products to a client base Australia-wide.

Other ventures

Shock also started the company, CDFA, an entertainment distribution and fulfillment company, and also engages in music publishing. Recent developments include the launch of Ragged Company Touring and Kimchi Creative Services.[3]

Accolades and achievements

Shock has received the Governor of Victoria Export Award in 1995, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004.

Shock's first #1 record was Smash by the American punk band The Offspring. Shock Records opened its first New Zealand branch in 1999 with its first release Crush by Jennifer Paige, which reached #1 with chart topping success.

Internet

Shock was the first major Australian record company to use the Internet to its full extent. In 1994 they were the first Australian record company to market records on the internet and in 1997 they offered free MP3 downloads of forthcoming singles by bands such as Frenzal Rhomb and Bodyjar.

Export arm

"Shock Exports" was the export arm of Shock Records. From 1988 until 2010, Shock Exports was the leading supplier of Australian manufactured music products to the world market. Shock Exports distributed independent and major label audio and visual releases to approx. 650 clients in 77 countries with a client base that included chain stores, distributors, retailers, mail order companies and online sellers. Clients included chains such as HMV (Japan, UK, USA, SE Asia), Virgin (France, UK, USA) FNAC (France), WOM (Germany), Libro (Austria), Free Record Store (Netherlands).

Shock Exports was the recipient of 6 Governor of Victoria Export Awards for excelling in their field of music distribution. Shock also achieved the prestigious accolade of Australian Exporter of the Year in the Austrade Arts & Entertainment Category in 1999.
