Shona Brown is a business executive and consultant to non-profits and corporations. She was a Google executive for a decade, most recently the Senior Vice President of business operations in 2012, before stepping down to become an advisor to the company. [1]

Personal life

Brown has a bachelor of computer systems engineering from Carleton University in Canada and a master's degree in economics and philosophy from Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar. Brown received her Ph.D and postdoctoral degree from Stanford University's Department of Industrial Engineering and Engineering Management.[2]

Career

Brown joined Google in 2003 and took on the responsibility of building both the People Operations and Business Operations groups. Prior to joining Google from October 1995 to August 2003, Brown was at McKinsey & Company, a management consulting firm, where Brown had been a partner in the Los Angeles office since December 2000.[3] In October 2007 she was involved with a secret and illegal non-solicitation compact between several top tech companies to not poach engineers from rival firms.[4]

An Effective as of April 13, 2011, and in connection with a management reorganization, Brown became Senior Vice President for Google.[5][6]

Brown is the author of Competing on the Edge: Strategy as Structured Chaos, which introduced a strategy for competing in markets. Brown is a director of the non-profit organizations such as San Francisco Jazz Organization, the Bridgespan Group and the Exploratorium. Brown also served on the board of PepsiCo.[7]

Brown is one of the "25 highest-paid women" ranking at #6 with $16,268,742.[8][9]

In 2006, CNN included Brown as one of four rising stars in their Most Powerful Women in Business section.[10]
