Thiri Thihathura Shwetaungtet (Burmese: သီရိ သီဟသူရ ရွှေတောင်တက် [θìɹḭ θìha̰θùja̰ ʃwè dàʊɴ tɛʔ]; reign name: Anawrahta I of Sagaing; 1313–1339) was king of Sagaing from 1336 to 1339.[1] He seized the Sagaing throne by arresting his father King Tarabya I. In 1339, he was killed by Chief Minister Nandapangyan who wanted to place Kyaswa, the middle son of Saw Yun, the founder of the kingdom, on the throne. After his death, his father the captive king was also killed by Nandapangyan.[2]

Notes

  1. The chronicles do not agree on his birth year. Maha Yazawin (Maha Yazawin Vol. 1 2006: 271) says he died in 701 ME (1339/1340 CE) at age 18, meaning he was born c. 1321. Hmannan Yazawin per (Hmannan Vol. 1 2003: 389–390) says he died in 701 ME at 27, meaning he was born c. 1312. Zatadawbon Yazawin has two conflicting entries. Its list of Sagaing monarchs (Zata 1960: 43) shows Shwetaungtet also dying at 1339/1340 but at age 28, meaning he was born c. 1311 while its horoscope section (Zata 1960: 70) explicitly states he was born in 1313. Given that his father Tarabya I was born only in 1297, the later dates, 1313 and 1321, are more probable.
