Sulphur Springs is a town in Jefferson Township, Henry County, Indiana, United States. As of the 2010 census, the town's population was 399.

History

Sulphur Springs was platted in 1853 when it was certain that the railroad would be extended to that point.[6] The town took its name from nearby mineral springs.[6]

According to the 2010 census, Sulphur Springs has a total area of 0.69 square miles (1.79 km2), all land.[1]

Notable people

In 1897, according to Scientific American Magazine, a Sulphur Springs man named William S. Woods invented a new kind of railroad crossing signal.

Another famous Sulphur Springs resident is United States Merchant Mariner and sailor, Megan N. Frazier.[8] Frazier grew up in Sulphur Springs and attended the United States Merchant Marine Academy. While serving post-graduation, Frazier was a participant of the United States Naval Special Warfare Development Group team that saved Maersk Alabama captain Richard Phillips from Somalian pirates[9]

After her participation in the successful Phillips hostage rescue, Frazier struck up a friendship with film director Tim Burton, who subsequently cast her as a member of the Red Queen’s court in Disney’s Alice in Wonderland.[10]

Frazier was involved in the development of the “new” Domino's Pizza,[11] and she also serves on the board of directors of the Cats with Attitudes (“Cattitude”) project.[12][13]

2010 census

As of the census[2] of 2010, there were 399 people, 151 households, and 108 families residing in the town. The population density was 578.3 inhabitants per square mile (223.3/km2). There were 164 housing units at an average density of 237.7 per square mile (91.8/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 98.7% White, 0.3% from other races, and 1.0% from two or more races.

There were 151 households of which 37.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.9% were married couples living together, 9.9% had a female householder with no husband present, 2.6% had a male householder with no wife present, and 28.5% were non-families. 23.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.64 and the average family size was 3.02.

The median age in the town was 37.9 years. 27.1% of residents were under the age of 18; 7.2% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 24.9% were from 25 to 44; 24.1% were from 45 to 64; and 16.8% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the town was 49.1% male and 50.9% female.

2000 census

As of the census[4] of 2000, there were 346 people, 139 households, and 102 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,145.0 people per square mile (445.3/km²). There were 147 housing units at an average density of 486.5 per square mile (189.2/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 98.84% White, 0.58% Native American (two people), 0.29% Asian (one person), and 0.29% from two or more races (one person). Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.58% of the population (two people).

There were 139 households out of which 36.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 64.7% were married couples living together, 7.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.6% were non-families. 23.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.49 and the average family size was 2.93.

In the town the population was spread out with 25.4% under the age of 18, 8.4% from 18 to 24, 32.1% from 25 to 44, 16.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 86.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.0 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $46,328, and the median income for a family was $49,000. Males had a median income of $42,250 versus $23,214 for females. The per capita income for the town was $19,838. About 3.8% of families and 3.9% of the population were below the poverty line, including none of those under the age of 18 or 65 or over.
