Things to Come (French title: L'Avenir) is a 2016 French-German drama film written and directed by Mia Hansen-Løve and starring Isabelle Huppert.[4][5] Principal photography began on 22 June 2015 in Paris.[2] It was selected to compete for the Golden Bear at the 66th Berlin International Film Festival.[6][7] At Berlin, Hansen-Løve won the Silver Bear for Best Director.[8]

Production

Hansen-Løve stated that she wrote the role of Nathalie with Isabelle Huppert in mind.[9] She also admitted that the character of Nathalie was loosely based on her own mother who was a philosophy professor who separated from her husband later in life.[10]

Critical response

Things to Come received generally positive reviews from critics. Review aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes gives the film a 100% approval rating, based on 9 reviews, with an average score of 8.8/10.[11] At Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics, the film received an average score of 88, based on 6 reviews, indicating "universal acclaim".[12]
