Tough as Iron (Hangul: 깡철이; RR: Ggangcheoli) is a 2013 South Korean film written and directed by Ahn Gwon-tae, starring Yoo Ah-in in the title role.[1][2][3]

Plot

A young man named Gang-cheol (whose name means "iron" in Korean[4]) was once a legendary street gangster in Busan,[5] but he put away his fists and cleaned up his act for the sake of his mother Soon-i, who has Alzheimer's. He did not have a regular job at the beginning but things went well for him; he now works as a stevedore at a loading dock and is pursuing a relationship with Soo-ji, a free-spirited woman who was having a vacation in Busan. But Soon-i is diagnosed with kidney failure and needs an expensive organ transplant that he can't afford. Knowing that Gang-cheol is desperate for money, local gang leader Sang-gon proposes that Gang-cheol come work for him and his brother Hwi-gon. At first Gang-cheol refuses, but when his debt-ridden best friend Jong-soo gives the deed to Gang-cheol's house to Sang-gon as collateral for a private loan, he's left with no choice but to get dragged back into Busan's criminal underworld. First, he has to cover the mistake that Hwi-gon has done before. Second, Gang-cheol is ordered to kill a visiting Japanese Yakuza boss named Aktio whose death will enable Sang-gon's ascension within the Korean branch of the mob organization. He finally goes to the place where Akito is but he fails to kill him. As he fails the mission, gangs are about to kill Gang-cheol. But because he also has a good physical moves, he does not get killed easily. While they were fighting each other, the car crashes and everyone in the car knocks out. Eventually, Sang-gon and Hwi-gon gets killed. And Soon-i gets surgery but unfortunately, she dies at the end. When Gang-cheol woke up, he was in the hospital. He finally gets cured and bury her mother’s cremated body where she wanted to be. As the movie ends, Gang-cheol and Soo-ji meets again and goes to vacation together.

What does it symbolizes?

It talks specifically about Korean society. In these days, nothing could be done without money. For example as we see in the movie, Soon- i can not get surgery because they do not have enough money for the surgery. It also symbolizes the people who does anything to earn money. For example, Gang-cheol who is a young bright man needed money in order to earn money for his mother so he involves with gang. He works for them even though it is not an appropriate thing and it could also be threatened in his own life. Therefore, the movie talks specifically about Korean society and also criticizes about it.

Release

Tough as Iron opened in South Korean theaters on October 2, 2013.[6] It grossed US$7,889,145 on 1,209,363 admissions.

It also received a limited theatrical release in the United States (October 11, 2013) and Japan (May 2014).[7][8][9]
