Vital Health Foods is the largest vitamin and nutritional supplement company in Africa,[1][2] with a head office in Cape Town and a subsidiary in Australia. The company exports to 20 countries in Africa, Eastern Europe, the Middle East, North America, and Australia. Vital is a family-owned and -run company.[3][4] The manufacturer adheres to medicinal Good Manufacturing Processes.[5] It is audited by the Medicines Control Council in South Africa and by Therapeutic Goods Administration internationally.[4]

History

Vital Health Foods was the first health foods company in South Africa, founded in 1947 by Mr. Jack Grieve in the small town of Wellington, South Africa.[6][7] The company is now headquartered in Johannesburg.[6]

In 1999, Vital Health Foods Australia became a wholly owned subsidiary of Vital Health Foods.[8]

In 2011, the former chairman of supplements manufacturer Wassen International sold his controlling interest to Vital Health Foods, in return for access to a manufacturing plant in South Africa.[3]

George Grieves is the current managing director of Vital Health Foods.[3][7]

Sponsorship

The company invests 2% of its profits in charity.[9]

Vital Health Foods is the developmental partner for the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon, which assists development of the sport in South Africa.[1][10][11] The company is also an affiliate partner of Endurocad, a non-profit organisation dedicated to endurance sports.[12][13] From 2006 until 2010, the company provided R2.5 million in scholarship funds to the Bishops Rugby, the rugby team of Diocesan College.[14]

Vital Health Foods founded the publicly-funded Vital Foundation in 2013, in order to support via funding, promotion, and information South African organisations which deal with woman and child abuse.[7][15][16] The organisation raised R3.9 million in 2013, and R1.9 million in 2014.[17] By May, 2015, the organisation had raised R6.8 million.[18] Proceeds of the Winelands Vital Run go toward the Vital Foundation.[19]

Vital supports the Proudly South African campaign.
