Warraich

Warraich (Urdu pronunciation: وڑائچ) is a sub caste of Jat (Jutt) clan. The people of Warraich family live in Pakistani Punjab and also in Indian Punjab. They are mostly landowners.

History

According to Sir Lepel Griffin, the tribe migrated to Punjab during the reign of Mehmood of Ghazni and settled in Gujrat, in present day Pakistan. A Jat named Warraich alongwith his five sons moved from Chenab to the two cities Gujrat and Gujranwala. During the period of Feroz Shah Tughlaq, a certain Haria leader of these Warraich Jats converted to Islam and founded a village near Gujrat city later named Hariawala after him.[1][2]

Religion

Warraichs in Pakistani Punjab are Muslim while Warraichs of Indian Punjab and Haryana are mainly Sikhs.

Geographical Distribution

In Pakistan, Warraich are mostly found in the districts of Gujrat and Gujranwala. They are also settled in Multan, Bahawalpur, Duniapur and Sargodha. In India, Warraich are mostly found in Haryana, Patiala and Amritsar district.[3]
