Yamashita Station (山下駅 Yamashita-eki?) is a railway station operated by JR East in Yamamoto, Miyagi Prefecture, Japan. It has been closed since the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami, when the station building was severely damaged and became unusable. JR East plans to move the station to a new location slightly farther inland, and aims to re-open the surrounding section of the Joban Line by 2017.[1]

Yamashita Station is served by the Jōban Line, and is located 325.7 rail kilometers from the official starting point of the line at Nippori Station.

Station layout

Yamashita Station had a single island platform and a side platform connected to the station building by an overhead passageway. The station had a Green Window ticket counter.

History

Yamashita Station opened on May 10, 1949. The station was absorbed into the JR East network upon the privatization of the Japanese National Railways (JNR) on April 1, 1987. Services on the Joban Line between Hamayoshida Station and Soma Station have been suspended due to damage caused by the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami.
